.

The Selection panel is primarily meant for dealing with items of a multiple selection. The panel by default lists the fragments currently selected in the active document:

You can double-click a fragment in the Selection panel to bring into view the corresponding selected fragment in the document window. This is how the panel can be used to navigate among items of a multiple selection.

Although the Selection panel is a convenient tool for navigating among selected document fragments, its main purpose is to let you perform various actions on individual items of a multiple selection without losing the multiple selection itself.

Let's take an example. Let's suppose that you need to revise all the document paragraphs associated with the paragraph style named "My style". You can click the corresponding style in the Styles panel of the Control Board The Control Board is a component of the Atlantis GUI that brings together various tools and commands for document design. It is a set of panels each of which deals with one specific characteristic of the active document:

, then use the Select paragraphs associated with highlighted style Button image command of the Styles panel to select all the paragraphs associated with "My style" as a multiple selection. You can now navigate among selected paragraphs in any suitable way (including the Selection panel). But if you decide to make a change to any of the selected paragraphs, the other selected paragraphs would be deselected, and the multiple selection would be lost.

This is when the Selection panel will be most useful. You can use it to "lock" the current document selection so that each fragment of the selection could be edited or formatted independently from other fragments.

To lock the current document selection, click the Lock selection Button image button at the bottom of the Selection panel. After this the Selection panel would start listing the locked fragments. Those fragments would display in the document window with hatching:

Locked selection

After locking the document selection, you can perform various actions on any fragment of the locked selection without running into risk of losing other items of the locked selection. You can even make new selections in the document. The locked selection would be still available in the Selection panel.

You can navigate among fragments of a locked selection by double-clicking corresponding items in the Selection panel.

Information about locked selection is not saved to a document file.

When the locked selection is not needed any more, you can click the Lock selection Button image button at the bottom of the Selection panel to cancel the lock.

When the Mouse Hover Previews option is checked in the settings menu of the Control Board:

hovering the mouse over the selected fragments in the panel temporarily highlights them in the document window:

The toolbar at the bottom of the Selection panel includes the following commands:
