Special Symbols

When you view documents in Atlantis, various special symbols might be displayed in the document window. These special symbols are never printed on paper. Their only purpose is to indicate some special characters and special formatting present in a document.

By default, special symbols are not displayed in the document window. They start displaying only when you activate the Special symbols mode. To toggle this mode on or off, click the Special symbols toolbar button, or choose the View | Special Symbols menu command, or press the Ctrl+Shift+8 keys.


Unlike ordinary characters (letters, digits, etc), nearly all the special characters of Atlantis are never printed on paper. Nearly all the special characters are also not displaying in the document window when the "Special symbols" mode is off. To make managing special characters easier, Atlantis can display special symbols instead of all the special characters. For this, you need to activate the "Special symbols" mode. The following table explains all the special characters of Atlantis, and tells which symbols are displayed instead of these characters when you activate the "Special symbols" mode:

Tab character This character is used for lining up text or numbers in tables, or for aligning text to a specific location in the document (click here to read about Tabs).

Em space Traditionally defined as a space character with a width equal to the current point size.

Nonbreaking
hyphen
Prevents an automatic line break (line wrap) at its position.
Printed on paper as ordinary hyphen.

This character displays in the document as an ordinary hyphen only when the word that contains it, needs to be hyphenated. This character allows to specify positions for hyphenation.

The following table lists all other special symbols that can be displayed by Atlantis under the "Special symbols" mode:

Indicates bookmarked locations or text fragments in a document. Also called "bookmark delimiters".
When documents include automatic footnote or endnote reference marks, the corresponding note reference marks are shown with a dotted frame.
Note that custom note reference marks are not framed in such a way. They are displayed as is (raw).
When a paragraph has the Keep with next paragraph attribute toggled on, this special symbol is displayed in front of the first line of this paragraph (normally in the left margin of the document page).
When a paragraph has the Keep intact attribute toggled on, this special symbol is displayed in front of the first line of this paragraph (normally in the left margin of the document page).
When a paragraph has the Page break before attribute toggled on, this special symbol is displayed in front of the first line of this paragraph (normally in the left margin of the document page).
