Special symbols

Any document in Atlantis contains special symbols that are never printed on paper.

By default, special symbols are not displayed in the document window. They become visible when you activate the Special symbols mode. To toggle this mode on or off, click the Special symbols Button image toolbar button, or choose the View | Special Symbols menu command, or press the Ctrl+Shift+8 keys.

The following table lists all the special symbols of Atlantis:

Special symbol Description Associated hot key
The "end of paragraph" mark.

Terminates each paragraph.
¤ The "end of cell" mark.

Terminates each table cell.
¤ The "end of row" mark.

Terminates each table row.
Line break

Starts a new paragraph line without starting a new paragraph.
·····Page Break····· Page break

Creates a manual page break.
·····Column Break····· Column break

Starts a new column in a multicolumn section.
:::::Section Break::::: Section break

Starts a new document section.
Tab character

Tab characters are used for lining up text or numbers in tables, or for aligning text to a specific location in the document.
° Nonbreaking space

Prevents an automatic line break (line wrap) at its position.
Em space

Traditionally defined as a space character with a width equal to the current point size.
En space

1/2 of Em space.
1/4 Em space
Nonbreaking hyphen

Prevents an automatic line break (line wrap) at its position.
Optional hyphen

Indicates a position within a word where an automatic hyphen can be placed.
Bookmark delimiters

Indicates bookmarked locations or text fragments in a document.
Automatic note reference

When documents include automatic footnote or endnote reference marks, they are highlighted with a dotted frame.
Note that custom note reference marks are not framed in such a way.
