PDF files produced with Atlantis: Page breaks

Post by Moonlight »

When creating a PDF-file from a doc-file there is always a lot of white space at the page breaks. (Not only when the PDF is created by Atlantis but in general):

Page break - white space.jpg
Page break - white space.jpg (17.79 KiB) Viewed 11339 times

In order to remove this white space I use a practical feature in the "PDF-XChange Editor" ("Crop Pages" with the crop method "Remove Vertical White Space").

Depending on the program (converter) with which the PDF-file was produced, there may arise the following problem:

When the page break coincides with a blank space (I mean the space which exists typically between between two paragraphs), after the cropping this blank space is also lost. And of course this result is undesired.

Here are two examples:

Lost Blank Space-1.jpg
Lost Blank Space-1.jpg (30.51 KiB) Viewed 11339 times

Lost Blank Space-2.jpg
Lost Blank Space-2.jpg (17.34 KiB) Viewed 11339 times

If you compare it with the "original" (= uncropped) PDF-file or with the doc-file, you can see that at these spots there should be a blank space.

As mentioned, it depends on the converter if this issue occurs or if the blank space is kept as it should. (E.g. in PDF files created by go4convert.com the blank space is preserved.) Unfortunately the problem occurs with the PDF files created with Atlantis 5. (And it has not to do specifically with SumatraPDF as viewer. The PDFs are displayed in the same way e.g. in the PDF-XChange Editor.)

So please could you check if this situation can be changed?

Thanks in advance.

PS: I attach the Atlantis-PDF-file after being cropped with PDF-XChange Editor. The uncropped Atlantis-PDF-file and the doc-file are the same as the ones I uploaded in the other topic concerning the hyperlinks: viewtopic.php?t=2696

Here are two examples how the environment of a page break shoud look like after cropping, when in the original file there is blank space at this point (PDF-file produced with go4convert.com, cropped with PDF-XChange Editor - see attachment):

Atlanis-Test-go4-cropped-2.jpg
Atlanis-Test-go4-cropped-2.jpg (31.07 KiB) Viewed 11324 times
(The places of the page break are not exactly the same as the ones in the PDF-file created by Atlantis. So you cannot compare these spots directly. There is always a difference of 2-3 lines between the files of e.g. go4convert and Atlantis.)

I have no idea how PDF-XChange Editor decides what to crop. There are no paragraphs in PDF documents, and there is no such thing as “space after a paragraph” as well. I am not aware of a method to mark blank space at the bottom of a page in a PDF document as “non-croppable”.

O.k. That's no good news. But thank you for your reply.

Atlantis may one day offer its own cropping option when “saving as PDF”.

The next release of Atlantis will have new options in the "Save as PDF" dialog:

Thanks for the new feature (version 5.0.4). :D It works very comfortably.

The results are not always perfect but I could imagine that for technical reasons this is inevitable. The situation is more or less the opposite one to the cropping made by "PDF-XChange Editor" (always tested with a PDF-file created by Atlantis).

The PDF-XChange Editor on some spots eliminates desired space (as described in my first post). Atlantis on some spots adds undesired space.

But in any case it is nice to have the cropping feature.

The “Crop blank areas” option works similarly to the “Hide white space" option in the document window of Atlantis.

What “undesired space” do you mean?

Here are two examples (the typical cases in my documents).

O .... original document (doc-file, respectively rtf-file, created with MS Word)
A .... the pdf-file (created by Atlantis) cropped with the new feature of Atlantis
X .... the pdf-file (created by Atantis) cropped with the PDF-XChange Editor

Example 1:
In the original there is no blank line between first and second line but when cropping with Atlantis a blank space is created. With XChange-Editor this is not the case (but I admit that the space seems to be a little bit too small compared with the regular 1,5 lines).

Example 2:
The page break occurs within a table and it coincides with the end of a row. In this case the cropping result with XChange-Editor is visually more pleasant than with Atlantis.
(The same applies when the page break occurs inside a row/cell.)

But I am aware that in other cases it is Atlantis that produces the "better" result:

Example 3:
In the following example a page break coincides with a blank line in the original. So the space produced (or preserved?) by Atlantis when cropping is welcome, whereas when cropping with XChange-Editor the desired space gets lost:

O:

4-O.jpg
4-O.jpg (25.71 KiB) Viewed 1578 times

A:

4-A.jpg
4-A.jpg (28.12 KiB) Viewed 1578 times

X:

4-X.jpg
4-X.jpg (23.85 KiB) Viewed 1578 times

I assume that no cropping method can handle all the described cases in an ideal way.

In the original there is no blank line between first and second line but when cropping with Atlantis a blank space is created.
Were you comparing the original document in Atlantis under the Print Layout view or Draft view?

PDF files are generated in the Print Layout view. The "Crop blank areas" option never adds extra space to what you get under the Print Layout view.
