improve non-keyboard character input?

Post by AEN007 »

2April2013

It seems to me that Atlantis could improve
how it handles non-keyboard character input.
I am using 1.6510.

I use ezAX for all my non-keyboard characters.
Atlantis seems to not accept/display non-keyboard unicode characters from exAX.
I can't even input the € symbol in Atlantis with exAX.
I don't even see how to input the € symbol in Atlantis!
Atlantis seems to call the native MS-Win character utility.
Am I missing something?

If I use AX (version 4.22) with the “Combine By” option set to “Merging”:

AX works as designed by its authors in Atlantis Word Processor version 1.6.5.11 (the latest official version).

Note that AX does not work in Atlantis Word Processor if I change the AX “Combine By” option to “Masking”.

I have AX ver421 - which is latest version @ the AX website.
I already have AX set to Merge.
Atlantis will not display the/my € symbol from AX.
Atantis will accept/display SOME other (but not many) symbols from AX ...

The AX version I downloaded yesterday is the following version:

If I choose “Symbol” as the “Main Cycle” option in the AX settings, and I type the “£” symbol, then press “F8” in Atlantis, it is automatically changed to the euro symbol.

Well, the problem here is as I've described.
It seems to be a UNICODE issue.
If I PasteSpecial-UNIC a € symbol, Atlantis does display it.
If I PasteSpecial-Plain a € symbol, Atlantis does not display it.
When I use exAX to input a € symbol, Atlantis does not display it.

Is there some Atlantis setting somewhere
to default to UNICODE input?

How exactly do you input the euro symbol with AX?
Also why do you call it "exAX"? The name is "AX". See http://vulpeculox.net/ax:
AX allows you to alter any character's accent always using the same key.

What happens if you type “Alt+8364” in Atlantis?

If I paste the euro symbol from the Windows clipboard into Atlantis, it does not matter whether I use “Ctrl+V” or Plain Text or Plain Unicode Text, I get a euro symbol in most cases, i.e. when the surrounding text is formatted with a “normal” font.

But if I paste the same “euro” clipboard contents as Plain Text into a fragment of text formatted with the “Symbol” font, I get a blank square instead of the euro symbol. This is because the “Symbol” font does not include the euro symbol among its characters.

First, you keep calling this utility “ezAX”. Its exact name is simply “AX”.

If I use AX (version 4.22) with the “Combine By” option set to “Merging”, AX works as designed by its authors in Atlantis Word Processor version 1.6.5.11 (the latest official version). Note that AX does not work in Atlantis Word Processor if I change the AX “Combine By” option to “Masking”.

If I choose “Symbol” as the “Main Cycle” option in the AX settings, and I type the “£” symbol, then press “F8” in Atlantis, it is automatically changed to the euro symbol.

If I paste the euro symbol from the Windows clipboard into Atlantis, it does not matter whether I use “Ctrl+V” or Plain Text or Plain Unicode Text, I get a euro symbol when the surrounding text is formatted with the “Arial Narrow” font. The Arial Narrow font includes the Euro symbol:

However, if I paste the same “euro” clipboard contents as Plain Text into a fragment of text formatted with the “Symbol” font, I get a blank square instead of the euro symbol. This is because the “Symbol” font does not include the euro symbol among its characters.

If you type “Alt+8364” in Atlantis and the current font is Arial Narrow, you should get a euro symbol. If this does not work, there must be something wrong with either your AX or Windows setup. Try reinstalling AX. Try pasting into the Windows Notepad.

It seems I have encountered a new/related problem ...
I'm not sure what the explanation is ...
If I do exAX in MS-WordPad with Arial Narrow,
MS-WP cycles through all the characters for the letter "c"
but Atlantis does not ... Atlantis cycles only one time ...

You keep calling this utility “exAX”, or “ezAX”. Its exact name is simply “AX”.

On my system, “AX” works in the same expected way in both Atlantis and MS Wordpad.

You should try to uninstall, re-download, then reinstall “AX”.

The problems you have with “AX” are not related to Atlantis. AX works as designed by its authors in Atlantis Word Processor version 1.6.5.12 (the latest official version).

As explained in section “C. The Clip Library” and “D. AutoCorrect” of this AtlanTips page (Inserting characters not available directly through the keyboard), you can insert special characters into any document through the Atlantis Clip Library, or through the special asterisk modes of the Clip Library, or through appropriate AutoCorrect replacement pairs.

You don’t really need third-party utilities to insert special characters in Atlantis.
