Windows 7 issue
Trying Atlantis 1.6.5.2 on Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, I found two odd problems.
1. RTF files created in Atlantis on an XP system, when loaded on Windows 7 system, ALWAYS flagged as read-only. Regardless of their true status. If the files were saved again to another folder, all was well.
2. Also noticed that if multiple files were loaded from the original source, Atlantis - let's say four files - Atlantis would refuse to load the last file, throwing up a message explaining that it could not be found. Close down and restart, and the next file in line would not be found, etc.
In both cases, the original files were double checked back on the XP system, copied back so I knew they were exactly the same file, and found to behave normally.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes, I installed Atlantis on Windows 7 from the latest setup file, freshly downloaded. The RTF files were copied from another PC, but work fine in MS Word, WordPerfect, etc. Any ideas what went wrong?admin wrote:Did you install Atlantis under Windows 7 by running the setup file of Atlantis, or just by copying the Atlantis files from your XP system?
Did you run Atlantis in any compatibility mode under Windows 7?
BTW, since re-saving the RTF files to a new folder, Atlantis has been behaving perfectly.

It does matter if you say that Atlantis opens a document file in your system differently depending on where you put the file to. Do I understand you correctly? Do you mean that your Atlantis opens any document from the "C:\Text" folder as read-only? Did you try opening files from other folders? What if you initially put your files to the "My Documents" folder?

No, I think we're talking at cross purposes.admin wrote:It does matter if you say that Atlantis opens a document file in your system differently depending on where you put the file to. The fix that I found was to open these files and save them to a different location. But this was simply to a new folder, also located under C:\Text. Since doing this, all has been well.

Further to this, I can tell you that EVERY document of any type that I have newly tried to load from my copied C:\Text folder comes up in Atlantis as 'read only' regardless of its actual status. A newly opened document will not allow me to save it back to the same place under the same title, (overwriting the original), but will let me save it under a different name or to a different folder. Weird.
Hi Nicholas,
Could you please try the following?
1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to your “C:\Text” folder.
2. Select one of the files that Atlantis opens as “read-only”.
3. Right-click that selected file, then click “Properties” in the pop-up menu.
4. Is the “read-only” box checked in the Properties dialog?
5. If so, uncheck that box and OK out of the dialog.
6. Open Atlantis and try to open the file whose read-only properties you just removed.
Does Atlantis open that file normally?
If this is the case, you need to remove the read-only properties for all the files in your “C:\Text” folder. Simply, select all the files, right-click and follow the same procedure as shown above in paragraphs 4 and 5.
HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

Checking whether files were flagged as read only was the very first thing I did. As I've been saying all along, it isn't that simple.
Files which are most definitely NOT marked as read only, when taken into Atlantis for the first time on the Windows 7 machine, are flagged by Atlantis as read only whenever an attempt is made to save them back to the same folder and under the same title. In other words, overwriting. However, if the same files are saved to a different folder, either in the same name or different name, all is well from that point.
Having tried flagging the entire C:\Text folder as NOT read only, and also done this on an individual folder, or file basis, I can report that although Windows 7 appears to make the change, checking the folder again seconds later show that it is read only! However, the crazy thing is, regardless of what Windows 7 reports, if a file has been taken into Atlantis, then saved to a NEW folder, it is not read only, even if it appears as such in Windows Explorer file manager.
Is this a Windows 7 fault or an Atlantis fault, or a bit of both?

Hi Nicholas,
Let’s get this straight. If you open a read-only file in any application under Windows, then save that same file under a different name to the same or to a different folder, the file is automatically saved without the read-only attribute. So Atlantis is not at fault at all for saving your read-only files as not read-only when you save them under a different name.
The crux of the matter is that your files are read-only, and if that read-only attribute is back within a few seconds after you have tried to remove it, this means that you cannot really remove that read-only attribute. You are under the impression that it has been removed, but it is an illusion: there is a time lag before Windows restores or redisplays the read-only attribute.
All this means that your files are protected either by Windows or by some other application. Firewalls do such things sometimes for example. Or it could be that you don’t have enough administrative rights to remove these read-only attributes.
I am afraid this has nothing to do with Atlantis.

Right-ho, will do. Thanks for looking into this. I am pleased that it will still be possible to use Atlantis as it is way better than Word.Robert wrote:Nicholas,
