Information About the New Release is Disturbing

Post by writenow »

I just found Atlantis WordProcessor News in my inbox and followed the link to find out what was new. (Was hoping it was tables)

What I found is that choices have been taken away in the latest version. And, for me, that means I can't ever upgrade again.

I don't use Windows' Programs folder to installl applications. On my XP system, Atlantis and all the other apps are installed in C:\MyPrograms. Atlantis' documents are stored in C:\MyDocs\AtlantisDocs. I only use the My Documents folder for junk files. My Win 7 computer has a similar setup.

From what I've read, it seems that if I upgrade, I will not be able to install to the folder of my choice, and that the documents will be saved to a folder designated by the new iteration of Atlantis, not where I want them. Is that correct? :(

Oh! My feature request: Give us back the choice of where and how to install.

You can choose to install Atlantis to any folder on your computer. You can also store your Atlantis documents under any folder on your hard disk. You do have a choice. But if you have both a standard and portable copy of Atlantis, it is preferable to store all the Atlantis files on your hard disk under the "My Documents\Atlantis" folder. It makes file and folder synchronization easier between hard and removable drives. It is preferable but not mandatory.

Thanks for clearing that up. This is where I got confused:

"So after upgrading to Atlantis version 1.6.5.8, each Windows account user will have an "Atlantis" folder under the Windows "My Documents" folder. Here are its typical contents:
PICTURE
. . . the Atlantis Setup file for version 1.6.5.8 will automatically make all the required adjustments to the Atlantis files on your hard disk and to the corresponding settings of Atlantis.

In previous versions of Atlantis, you could choose a custom location for the Atlantis Clip Library, Address Books, and Favorites. This is no longer possible in this new version of Atlantis. The location of these items is fixed. Being user-specific items, they are now always stored under the "My Documents\Atlantis" folder. The same regarding the spellcheck files. . ."

So, you are saying only the files listed above will be moved to the My Documents folder. The My Documents folder has become a dump station. I don't know why anyone would store files in it. I have things in there, I promise you, I have no idea what they are.

Right. Your Atlantis document templates will be also moved from "Program Files\Atlantis" to "My documents\Atlantis". The same regarding Backup Files. But you can choose a custom location for your Backup Files ("Tools | Options... > Load / Save > Backup Files... > Browse...").

Wel unlike the other guy I store almost everything personal/ business in My Docs
- but my documents are scattered across a comp[lex hierarchy of folders which also contains graphics, videos, programs etc
I do not get why programmers want us to store by type rather than topic.

Please reassure my Atlan docs will be left undisturbed?

Neither the Atlantis Setup nor Atlantis itself moves existing document files to another location. You can store your document files under any folder you want.
