Attaching notes to documents

Post by Robert »

Hi everybody,
In the past, some of you have expressed interest in a feature that would attach comments to documents in Atlantis. This isn’t available yet, but “GumNotes” (http://www.gumnotes.com/) is a third-party freeware application which will allow you to attach sticky notes to the documents that you create in Atlantis (I have tested it, it works. Of sorts. Please read on). You can even share your “GumNotes” with friends if you join a “GumNotes Team”.

Here is a description from the “GumNotes” Web site:
There are many ways to create sticky notes and comments on your desktop! But ever wondered where all your important notes have disappeared when you need them?
GumNotes is a great little program for users who just want sticky notes wherever you need them.
How it works
1. Open a document
This can be a website, an office document or an email.
2. Attach a note!
Open the GumNotes window in the systray bar and write a note.
3. Next time you open the document GumNotes shows your note.
Even for related documents GumNotes can show your note e.g. for follow up emails.
A few caveats though.

“GumNotes” needs the MS “.NET” Framework to be installed on your Windows system.

To store notes, “GumNotes” relies on the document name as it appears on the application title bar. If you are using the “Tools | Options > Show full paths” setting in Atlantis, it might be preferable to switch it off in case you move a file “annotated” with “GumNotes”. “GumNotes” does not “recognize” files that have changed folder location if the attached note was created with the document name as its full original (folder) path name.

“GumNotes” pops up the associated notes each time a document is open, but also each time it is displayed again. So if you switch back and forth between Atlantis and some other application(s), you’ll get the same note(s) popping up repeatedly each time you come back to Atlantis. This can be quite annoying!

As an option, “GumNotes” has “Open GumNotes when Windows start”. If you uncheck that option, you might still find “GumNotes” being launched at Windows startup. You’ll have to manually remove the entry from your Windows registry.

Finally, note that the current “GumNotes” version is a beta version. There is room for improvement.
HTH.
Cheers,
Robert
