Clipboard/Size

Post by Prince »

Can one say how big the clipboard is at Win 98? I tried yesterday to copy about 700kb (90 pages) from one cod-doc in another. Doing this I crashed Atlantis 4-times.

Clipboard operations

Post by Robert »

Hi!

I opened 2 big DOC documents (2 Mb+, 200 pages+), saved them as COD files, then copied the whole of one into the other.

And then the whole of the resulting file into the first one.

I ended up with 2 very big COD files (4Mb+, and 6 Mb+).

Atlantis did not crash, there was no problem at all.

This was under Windows XP with 512 Mb RAM and a "free" SWAP file.

I conducted similar tests under Windows 95 OSR2 with 256 Mb RAM and a 600Mb fixed-sized SWAP file.

Atlantis did not crash, there was no problem at all.

There must be something specific to either

- your system,

- the documents you were using,

- or the exact operations you launched.

Could you please be more specific?

Were the documents you used originally created in Atlantis?

Were they originally saved as COD files?

Did you copy from one COD file into another? Or from a DOC file into a COD file?

Did you use the Clippy Bank as a "go-between" in your copy/paste operations?

Did your "crashes" happen when copying, right after copying, when pasting, right after pasting, or when saving the COD files?

What is the size of your RAM?

Has your SWAP file a fixed size (imposed minimum and maximum size)?

What is the size of your SWAP file?

Is there enough free room on your HD to accommodate big chunks of clipboard data (big SWAP file activity)?

For example, the above copy/paste operations required the use of 250 Mb+ of SWAP file on my Windows XP system.

By the way, are you sure that Atlantis actually "crashed"?

Maybe it simply was taking a long time to process the data?

When there is not enough memory and/or SWAP file, operations involving big chunks of data can take ages before they are completed.

Did you get any error messages from Atlantis or from your system about your "crashes"?

What kind of information did you get in the Atlantis status bar? Did you wait till the progress bar had completely filled up?

Cheers,
Robert

Hi!

If you need some help finding out details about your system, you could use a pretty good freeware named "AIDA". Available at http://www.aida32.hu

I haven't tried AIDA yet. But my pc has 64 mb ram and a free swap file. Hard drive is at 6 gb with about 4,5 gb free.

Both docs were created as cod-files. Later I saved both as doc-files and tried it again.

But with the same result: "Atlantis 1.5 (reagiert nicht)" What means that the program is crashed.

After using Str + A and Strg + C program crashed. No error messages. It doesn't need really much time or so - I took a shower while waiting. Result was the same.

tried it with that Atlantis-Beta. Same lack of success. Seems to be related to the system. As the problem with setting a default mail client. For a short moment I thought on installing the os newly, but was to lazy.

I solved the problem for me by using insert->file.
