All fonts dropped
All fonts dropped
So I've been using Atlantis for a while, on Vista x64 then Win7 x64, across multiple machines. Installing the program and ensuring fonts are installed in Windows always resulted in my document showing up exactly as typed across all installs and machines.
Except today : new install on Win10 (Atlantis v4 and, as a test, V3) and all my document fonts have been converted to Arial.
I know the fonts are installed because I can manually change the text to what it's supposed to be; but I don't want to have and do that - it's 600 pages!
Anyone know how to fix this? Is it a Windows10 thing? Is it a "printer" setup thing?
I'm baffled because, just a few months back, I was able to go from my ancient Vista laptop (when it busted) to my "newer" Win7 desktop and resume work on this document with no problems whatsoever . . .

Okay, this probably will not solve the problem, but try it anyway.
First, I assume (and sincerely hope) that you are using styles in your document. I also hope that you are deriving all your styles from Normal (though that is not necessary). Try the following just to see if it makes any difference.
Make sure that the CONTROL BOARD is open.
Use the Control Board (Styles) to make sure that all your styles are set to use the desired font.
Then use the Control Board to select all the paragraphs for each style. You do this as follows:
1. Click one of your styles (in the Control Board).
2. Look at the icon at the bottom right of the Control Board (#7 from left). If the style is in use, the icon will display (will not be grayed out).
3. Now click that icon. This selects all the paragraphs that are tagged with that style.
4. Double-click the style name in the Control Board. This will re-apply the style to all the paragraphs with that style name.
5. Do this for all your styles that are in use.
I hope it works. Yeah, I know it's a long shot, but I have had instances (maybe not in Atlantis) where the styles just needed to be reapplied.

Re: Fonts were dropped
I'm not. I'm afraid I don't even understand the concept of "styles."rstroud wrote:First, I assume (and sincerely hope) that you are using styles in your document.
As I stated above, this has NEVER HAPPENED before. I'm on my 4th re-install of Atlantis, on two different machines, using different versions of Windows for the very same document and I've always been able to just load the doc and continue my work right where I left off.
So it's back to brute force, I guess. Heck, I should just switch to NotePad and stop hoping for something that will replace WordPerfect (a very nasty, uncooperative piece of bloatware I abandoned years ago...)
Many thanks, in any case, and be well!
Atlantis seems to know perfectly well what type to use: when I place the cursor, the toolbar shows Calligraph421 B, in 30pts. The size is correct, the text shows up as Arial on-screen...admin wrote:What typeface is reported by the Atlantis toolbars when you click your "Arial" text?
It would be good if your provided more details. A screenshot of the Atlantis window with your document might be helpful.
To be clear: if I select the text and re-apply the font, everything is well. But I don't want to re-apply formatting, section by section, on a 600 page doc!
I just don't understand why this is happening at all, for the first time since I've owned Atlantis.
UPDATE Problem half solved
One font, one to go!
Installing in Windows the fonts TT1044M_.ttf and TT1139M_.ttf fixed the Calligraph421 BT problem. In real time, no less!
(It was wild to see Atlantis reformat all text using this particular font on the fly! Go job Atlantis team!)
Still working on the Euphemia problem (which is, unfortunately, 99% of the contents! lol...

PROBLEM SOLVED - CLOSE TICKET
Installing the very same named font form a different website fixed the Euphemia problem!
Again in real time, good job Atlantis!
Now: does anyone know of a good .PDF reader that will also "print to file" ?
(PDFXchange stamped an overlay on every one of my pages today. First time ever it's done that.)
THANK YOU again everyone.

I downloaded “Calligraph421 BT - .TTF ” from Calligraph421 BT font and installed it on my Windows 10 system.
I created attached “Calligraph.docx” in latest Atlantis. It looked this way:

I then uninstalled the Calligraph421 BT font from my Windows 10 system.
I reopened “Calligraph.docx” in latest Atlantis. It looked that way:

Most likely, if Atlantis uses Arial to display the Calligraph421 BT font, it means that the Calligraph421 BT font is not actually installed on your system.
Note that fonts can be installed for the current user or for all users in Windows 10. Make sure that the Calligraph421 BT font is installed, and installed for the current user when you use Atlantis.

The best thing about standards . . .
The best thing about "standards" is that there are so many of them incompatible with one another!
On my system, installing TT1044M_.ttf (or TT1139M_.ttf - I'm not sure because I installed both at the same time) fixed my problem. Installing Euphemia from another website (same font name, same True Type Font) fixed the other problem.
My doc is back to normal, thank the baby Jesus. Gotta love the cluster**** that is modern computing.
And THANK YOU - that was a lot of work for you to do!!! Have yourself a Guinness! Hmmmm . . . Guinness!
BTW - do you know a good PDF printer? (i.e. "print to PDF")
The one I used with PDFXchange inbeds a watermark on every one of my pages, as of this week...

“TT1139M_.ttf” as available from Calligraphic 421 Roman has characters that look very much like those of “Calligraph421 BT font”.
Are you sure that your document is using “Calligraph421 BT font”, and not “Calligraphic 421 Roman”? The font name would look almost identical on the Atlantis toolbar…

Re: PROBLEM SOLVED - CLOSE TICKET
I have several things to say, but since this is the internet, and not a congenial face-to-face meeting where I could explain things in an obviously friendly way, I will be ... brief.SirVince wrote:Installing the very same named font form a different website fixed the Euphemia problem!
Now: does anyone know of a good .PDF reader that will also "print to file"?

PDF Files
First, the PDF issue. Are you talking about a PDF "reader" that will create a PDF file for you? I think that is what you mean, but that is not what "print to file" usually means. And when you talk about an "overlay", are you referring to a watermark that PDF-XChange is putting onto your pages?
I use PDF-XChange myself. I have the commercial version. It is a great application. If you are using a trial or free version, it may be that you are getting a watermark on each page because you do not have a license.
If you buy a license, the watermarks will disappear. You just install PDF-XChange, and the program creates a "printer" (which is really a driver that creates a PDF file). However, I should warn you that with PDF-XChange you have to check the properties of the driver each time. If you do not, the fonts will not be automatically embedded!
You might do better to try the FREE version of Bullzip, which I think you get here:
https://www.bullzip.com/products/pdf/download.php
I have used Bullzip. It embeds the fonts automatically, as I recall. It also comes as a commercial version, and these software companies often try to confuse you and trick you into downloading the commercial version (or so it seems to me). But try that link and see if you get the free version.
STYLES
SirVincent ... Listen to me, please. Just imagine that you need to get from town A to town B. They are 20 miles (32 km) apart. The road is nice, there is no traffic, but you have lots of hills between the two towns. The way that you are writing your project (a book?) is like using a bicycle to travel from A to B. With styles your trip would be like riding in a nice, powerful automobile.
I have a personal project that I will undertake, though I cannot do it for two or three weeks. I am going to write a very short, simple "how to" document on templates and styles, with a very easy example that includes graphics. I am really very good at that kind of thing, and it truly distresses me that many people out there are still formatting everything manually. It is just not the correct way to write a book.
THE FONTS
I am still not sure what happened. Atlantis or Windows did not automatically find the font, it seems, but when you applied the font manually, it appeared. I would only be speculating about what caused this. I have installed fonts onto Windows 10, and I do not recall having to choose whether the font was only for the current user or for everybody. In any case, you seem to have got that worked out.
Good luck!
More on PDF
Well, just as I figured would happen, Robert beat me with an answer by about a minute!
I will check out the free PDF driver that he mentioned.
Be sure to check the properties of the PDF that you create and make sure that the fonts are embedded. If they are not, anyone looking at the file on another computer will probably not have the unusual fonts that you are using.

Have a look at this picture.I do not recall having to choose whether the font was only for the current user or for everybody.
You’ll see that you can install a font for the current user or “for all users”.
The pull-down menu clearly shows "Calligraph421 BT" (without the quotation marks, of course) - I hope I understood your question . . .Robert wrote:“TT1139M_.ttf” as available from Calligraphic 421 Roman has characters that look very much like those of “Calligraph421 BT font”.

I'll give DoPDF (by Softland) a try.
Many thanks!

Re: PROBLEM SOLVED - CLOSE TICKET
I mean this: up until a week or so ago I had PDF-XChange installed as a printer (virtual printer I suppose is the term) so that in Atlantis I could "print" the document by choosing PDFXchange from the pull-down printer menu and generate a PDF file.rstroud wrote:First, the PDF issue. Are you talking about a PDF "reader" that will create a PDF file for you?
I mean that until a week or so ago, when I used PDFXchange (free version) the pdf file was just that: a file of my document to either read or print on paper. And when you talk about an "overlay", are you referring to a watermark that PDF-XChange is putting onto your pages?
Now every page is tagged at the top, both left and right, with a large black stamp that says "Free Version" and a URL in bright yellow. I've never, ever seen this in 4+ years of using this very same PDFXchange program. Nor have I ever paid for a license - and I certainly will not after today.
Evaluation version of Atlantis, by contrast, asked me to "Continue Evaluation" or "Enter Reg Code" when I exited - it did NOT stamp my text with enormous black spots, two at the top of every single page, telling me it's an "evaluation copy" or some such nonsense.
It's one more reason I was HAPPY to give Atlantis my money.
Indeed. I never did understand why the settings couldn't be saved across sessions. You just install PDF-XChange, and the program creates a "printer" (which is really a driver that creates a PDF file). However, I should warn you that with PDF-XChange you have to check the properties of the driver each time. If you do not, the fonts will not be automatically embedded!
I have a very vague memory of having switched to PDFXchange, long ago, precisely because of similar intrusive nonsense from Bullzip, but I've been perfectly satisfied with PDFXchange. Until a week or so ago.You might do better to try the FREE version of Bullzip
Sounds awesome! Now imagine saying that exact same phrase to a citizen of Tarllac VII, from the Fornax dwarf galaxy, who lands in his spaceship with no clue whatever what "miles," or "bicycle," or "automobile" means . . . I'm afraid the concept of "styles" means about as much to me.SirVincent ... Listen to me, please. Just imagine that you need to get from town A to town B. They are 20 miles (32 km) apart. All this assuming you're talking about features of Atlantis, rather than a discussion of aesthetics per se . . .
I am still not sure what happened. Atlantis or Windows did not automatically find the font, it seems, but when you applied the font manually, it appeared.
Here's the thing, which I swear is true on my dear departed grand-mama:
Following one of my many re-installs of Atlantis, on a fresh copy of Win7, I picked up where I had left off only to realize, after the fact, that I had FORGOTTEN TO INSTALL THE FONTS!
And yet - AND YET: Atlantis showed me my document exactly as I had typeset it. I was so amazed (remember: I had not installed any fonts!) that I assumed the program was so smart it had read the fonts from my folder, understood they were needed and installed them by itself.
Which would have been a miracle, admittedly.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the help!

Well, DOPDF did install a printer. At least.Robert wrote:the best free PDF converter can be downloaded from Free PDF Converter
Unfortunately it also installed 304(!) MB worth of crap (why???) - none of which was an actual reader, so far as I can tell. It in fact attempted to get me to install Adobe Reader! I just about fell out of my chair . . . Taking that trash out with Revo Uninstaller revealed it had ALSO installed 3 on-boot TSR's.
Tsk-tsk-tsk!
Have added SoftLand to the list of companies I will never - ever - do business with.
Thank you anyway, friend!

Sumatra
So, for now, the simplest and cleanest solution to my PDF woes is Win10's default "Microsoft print to PDF" which, at the moment, prints all my weirdo fonts perfectly fine.
For viewing/reading, the portable version of SUMATRA is tiny and fast.
May that help anyone else . . .
