Atlantis freezing computer

Post by lynneconnolly »

Me again, sorry!
The latest version of Atlantis is freezing my computer. I'm pretty sure it's that. When I haven't used it for a while, but have it up and active, my computer freezes.
Completely. The only thing I can do is a hard reset.
I ran troubleshooters, uninstalled and reinstalled Atlantis, uninstalled it, Thunderbird and Firefox, the other programs that were open at the time, cleaned the folders and the registry, restarted and reinstalled Atlantis with a fresh version.
I updated all my drivers, including Nvidia.
Atlantis froze again, once I stopped actually typing into it and left it up for a while. I get the spinning blue circle, and nothing works, mouse or keyboard, although the computer sounds as if it's working on something. But I can't get to the task manager to find out what's going on.
So I reinstalled the other programs, uninstalled Atlantis and reinstalled version 3.1 - it's a star again.
I have a Windows 10 computer, a tower, with 16gb of RAM, 450gb SSD for my OS and programs, 4gb Barracuda for the programs.
It might be just me, in which case, I'll wait for the next release and see how I get on with that. But if anybody else is having the same trouble, it might be a problem.

It was unnecessary to go through all those hoops. When and if Atlantis is causing such problems, most likely it is because it is doing some (background) operation on some of the loaded documents causing it to hang up.
First, you should try to kill the running instance of Atlantis through Task Manager. How did you try to open Task Manager? Please have a look at 9 Ways to Open Task Manager in Windows 10
After that you should try to remove Atlantis from the Startup menu, then reboot.
Finally, run Atlantis with Factory Settings (Tools | Factory Settings…) and try to determine which document is causing hang ups.
Note. If you cannot kill the running instance of Atlantis through Task Manager, you could try to reboot and launch Windows in Safe Mode. Please have a look at 7 ways to boot into Safe Mode in Windows 10
HTH.

I couldn't get to the task manager at all. My keyboard froze, and so did my mouse. All I had was the spinning circle. So it was impossible to kill it, or to see if there was a memory leak other than doing a hard reboot by physically switching the computer off. I autohide my task bar, so there was no way of getting to that, since I couldn't move the mouse over it to unhide it. I don't use a touch screen with this computer.
I got up, left my desk and came back after half an hour to find the circle still spinning. The computer should have gone to sleep after ten minutes, but it hadn't done that. I set the computer to run an error log, but nothing showed up.
No one document was causing the hang-ups. I opened a fresh one and tried to type in something new, but that didn't work either. It froze up again. Safe Mode gave me no clues, and of course I can't keep running my computer that way, so I'm not sure how that would help.
It's a puzzler! But the program is now running perfectly on 3.1.1,and I reopened every recent document in it. I tried reinstalling my settings, templates and so on from the last version, and it still worked well.

When you cannot use the mouse, a press on the Winkey might help. It brings up StartSceen and Taskbar together.
What about updating to latest Atlantis 3.2.1? Is 3.2.1 causing problems?

I can press on the keyboard all I like. Nothing happens except the little blue circle keeps spinning. It's processing something, but what it is is anyone's guess.
Absolutely no response, not even to the Esc key. It won't minimise, it won't respond to anything except pressing the power key on the tower.
I've set the computer to write an error log when it happens, but nothing shows up after the hard reset.
But 3.1 is working as well as ever. Since the subsequent releases don't have anything I really need (but they are nice!) I'm happy to continue with 3.1 until a new release comes out.
I still really like the program. Even when I crash out, it saves and restores when I start it up again (yes, I've deleted the original documents and copied and pasted them as plain text into another document). I only posted this to see if anybody else has the same problem, which might indicate a bug, but since nobody's posted, it's probaly just me, which helps to isolate the problem.

If a nonresponding application freezes the entire system, something is wrong with your Windows. Atlantis Word Processor is not a device driver. It could not freeze a Windows system entirely.

What if you launch the Task Manager in the "stay on top" mode before launching Atlantis?

I'm not sure what I did, but I fixed it. I stripped Atlantis out of the computer completely. I've been upgrading it since version 2, but when I removed every reference to it, then reinstalled a completely fresh copy, it worked again!
I'm a customizing fiend, so I assume that I'd done something that corrupted it. Certainly not Atlantis's fault, since it now works great.
