Why does Atlantis open really slowly sometimes?

Post by 357mag »

I've been thinking about changing to a different word processor because there are times that Atlantis takes too long to open a simple document.

However now I tried opening several documents and Atlantis is opening them up quickly.

Is this behavior normal? Have any of you noticed it?

I am using 1.6.6.4 on Windows 7 Professional.

As a rule, Atlantis opens all documents very quickly.
However, at times specific documents can open rather slowly if they contain many pages with plenty of pictures.
Note that the upcoming table version of Atlantis will open graphics-heavy documents a lot more quickly.
Otherwise, have you got enough memory and/or hard disk space for your temp folders?
Does your antivirus know that Atlantis is a most friendly application?
HTH.

Merry Christmas to All!

I don't use an anti-virus program. I stay very clean. There are no pictures in my documents.

I'll keep monitoring Atlantis I guess.

Is your Atlantis installed in the standard folder, i.e. “C:\Program Files\Atlantis”? Is your Atlantis document folder located at “C:\Users\<User Name>\Documents\Atlantis\Documents”?
If you have a specific document slowing down Atlantis, and there is no particular privacy concerns, could you please send it to support@AtlantisWordProcessor.com?

Looks like my folders are located in the correct spot. I do save my documents to a different folder though on my external drive.

This might very well be the explanation to these slowdowns.
Here is from https://forums.adobe.com/thread/784220?tstart=0:
The problem comes in, when one tries to edit to/from the external HDD. Most current computers are faster than the slower connection types can manage. The OS is firing commands for reads/writes too fast. The OS expects rapid response, and can overwhelm the external HDD. When one adds in an NLE (Non Linear Editor) program, there is a great deal of HDD activity, and this requires many reads and writes, and requires them quickly. The files are very large too. Suddenly, the I/O (Input/Output) sub-system is overwhelmed, but the requests keep coming.

Obviously, a SATA internal is ideal for all tasks.
I would personally say a SSD internal is ideal for all tasks. External hard drives connected through USB are well known for causing bottlenecks and slowdowns.
Also have you got enough free space on your external hard drive? Has it been defragmented recently? If you are working with a hard drive that is more than 75 percent full, this can slow down any application.

Solid State Drives do not need to be defragmented. There is plenty of room on the sucker.

I never suggested that SSDs should be defragmented. Most external hard drives are not SSDs. If yours is a SSD, then the problem might very well lie with the USB connection. It is a well-known bottleneck.
