New Install Ate All My Settings and Templates

Post by writenow »

I was having trouble with Atlantis (1.6.5.7). Every time I switched a search from Search Backwards to Search Forward I would get this message: Access violation at FC458B00. And then it would shut down. Finally I got it to hold the search but when I tried to edit the document it just hung there with the cursor blinking.

SO - I downloaded and installed Atlantis 1.6.6.1 over version 1.6.5.7 and destroyed everything. It doesn't recognize any of my carefully designed templates and it opened without any of my recent working files. It has destroyed the "Normal" template document, taken out all my tabs and changed the font to Arial 11. It also says: Unregistered Copy. Please register.

How can I get back my earlier version? Is there some place I can download it? And is there any way I can save myself the hours of work it will take to get it back in normal working mode?

P.S. Will it help if I tell you I am using XP SP3?

Never mind. I deleted it and restored my older version from a backup. That leaves me with the Search problem. Maybe you can help me with that?

Hi,
Most likely the Backward Search problem was fixed in later versions. You should always use the latest version of Atlantis. The best way to update is as follows:
1. Open Atlantis.
2. Click “Help | Check for updates…”
3. Follow onscreen prompts.

Note that updating Atlantis through this method will not destroy documents or templates. They might simply be relocated in more appropriate folders.

If updating Atlantis does not solve your problem, you could try running Atlantis with “Factory Settings”. For details, see Factory Settings

Out of sheer curiosity, is there any particular reason why you want to conduct searches in the “backward” direction?

Now about Templates and working files.

The default home folder for Atlantis “working files” is “C:\Users\<Windows User Name>\Documents\Atlantis”. This main folder contains several subfolders. Among them are:
1. “C:\Users\<Windows User Name>\Documents\Atlantis\Documents” (which is the default “Save to” folder). Note that the default location of this “Save to” folder can be customized through the “Suggest saving documents to:” option in the “Load/Save” tab of the “Tools | Options…” dialog.
2. “C:\Users\<Windows User Name>\Documents\Atlantis\Templates” (which is the mandatory folder for the Atlantis templates).

If you have changed the “Save to” default location one way or the other, your documents might not be lost, but simply located in a different spot.
If you try to use templates located in a folder different from “C:\Users\<Windows User Name>\Documents\Atlantis\Templates”, Atlantis will get stumped. The Atlantis Templates folder cannot be relocated or renamed.

HTH.

Thank you for trying to help.

Yes. I expected that the Backward Search problem would have been fixed by the newer version that I downloaded. And I did use the method you outlined to download the latest version.

No thank you. It was a lot of working getting Atlantis set up to my own specifications — one of the things I love about Atlantis is it's awesome flexibility — I certainly do not want to go back to Factory Settings.

I never thought the documents or the templates had been destroyed. I could see them in Explorer. I just didn't understand why Atlantis didn't see them. I did, in fact, change the default locations for both the documents and templates to what I consider "more appropriate" places. Your explanation tells me that any update of the app will override my settings and that is what caused the problem.

As for why I would want to search backward, it is because I write very long documents. and sometimes, knowing that the text I need is located many pages previous to my current position, it is quicker to search backward. HOWEVER, the problem occurred when I tried to change the Search Backward setting to Search Forward. That triggers, the message pops up and closes Atlantis.

BTW, I am using XP and do not have this folder: “C:\Users\<Windows User Name>\Documents\Atlantis\Templates”.

For now I guess I'll just live with the Search glitch . . . or maybe I've got an even older version on an old backup drive.

Anyway, thanks for the explanation.

Hi,
It is unclear if you are still getting access violation messages doing searches in the backward direction. If it is still the case, could you please send a sample document where this is occurring to support@AtlantisWordProcessor.com? And please explain exactly what you are searching for, with what options. This glitch is most likely document-specific.

Note that “Ctrl+Home” will take you to the beginning of the current document in the blink of an eye. This is just as fast as changing the search direction from forward to backward.
Also note that the search/replace regex patterns offered as examples in the Atlantis Help and in this very forum at Atlantis Word Processor - Examples Of Regex Patterns III have been designed for searches made in the forward direction towards the bottom of the documents. If you use them in the opposite direction, .i.e. in the backward direction towards the top of the documents, the search results might be different, even incorrect. Please, use them as they were designed, i.e. with searches made in the forward direction.

Now Atlantis will offer to save documents to the folder specified under the “Suggest saving documents to:” option in the “Load/Save” tab of the “Tools | Options…” dialog. You can change this default location at will. But it is preferable to use this option to make any change to the default Save to folder.

If you move your templates or templates folder to a different location from the mandatory default folder, you will most likely have trouble actually or correctly working with templates. You are running Windows XP, and you can get away with customized location for any working folder because it is a rather tolerant system. But from Vista on, Windows would never allow you so much customization. For example, the applications working folders cannot be located within their home folders, along their executables. From Vista on, the working folders are routinely located in “C:\Users\<Windows User Name>\Documents”. This can be changed with a lot of effort. But it is a rather futile exercise that can create more problems than it can solve.

If you install Atlantis in Windows XP through the official Atlantis setup file, the default location for the templates should be “C:\Users\<Windows User Name>\Documents\Atlantis\Templates”. If you open Atlantis and click “File | Document Templates…”, Atlantis will offer to use the templates located in its default mandatory Templates folder. If you click “File | Save Special > Save As Template…”, Atlantis will offer to save the current document to its default mandatory Templates folder. Files located in other folders won’t be accepted or saved as templates. Note that you can create as many subfolders as you wish under the Atlantis official main “Templates” folder. This is at your own discretion.

HTH.

Robert
