How do I re-arrange favorites?

Post by andygrunt »

Not sure if this is due to my using Windows 7 or not but is it possible to re-order the items in the favorites list?

I’ve got a favorites sub menu with several documents, added over the past week or so. Now they’re all there I want them to appear in a certain order. I’ve gone into ‘organize favorites’, ‘view favorites folder’ and tweaked the filenames so they appear in the correct order (in Windows explorer) but these changes don’t appear in the Atlantis favorites folder. The names aren’t changed and the order hasn’t changed either. However, if I click on one of the items that have changed, it still loads up no problem.

So, the question is, how can I rearrange the order of items in favorites?

Atlantis always displays Favorites alpha-sorted.

Did you tweak the filenames of your documents, or rename .lnk files under the Favorites folder of Atlantis. Note that the "Favorites" folder of Atlantis contains .lnk files which are links to actual document files. If you rename a document filename with Windows Explorer, this would not change the filename associated with a given .lnk file.

No, as I mentioned, I opened the favorites folder by clicking on the ‘view favorites folder’ in Atlantis and renamed the lnk files there. I assumed this was the way to do it. Atlantis may display the files in Alphabetic order but the problem seems to be Atlantis doesn’t see/show the amended names. I tried exiting and running it again but the old names still show.

Could it be related to my using Windows 7 and/or having to have my favorites folder in a non default location (C:\Users\Public\Documents\Atlantis Favorites)?

The problem is that Atlantis does not display the names of .lnk files found under the Favorites folder. Atlantis always displays names of actual document files associated with the .lnk files. Please right-click any file under the Favorites folder, and choose the "Properties..." command. The "Target" of a link file would be what is displayed in Atlantis not in Windows Explorer.

So renaming files under the Favorites folder is not sufficient. You need to rename actual document files as well. You also need to re-associate the link files from the Favorites folder with the renamed document files (right-click a link file, choose the "Properties..." menu command, then adjust the "Target" field).

Thanks but it was just easier to rename the rtf files, ‘delete obsolete’ favorites in Atlantis, open the files and add them back as faves. They’re in the right order now.

It would be nice if I could re-arrange the favorites by drag and dropping in the favorites list… can you consider that a wishlist item please?

Hi Andy,
Here is what you could do next time.

A. In Windows Explorer.

1. Rename your Atlantis favorite documents in Windows Explorer.
2. Select them.
3. Right-click the selection, hold the right button down, and drag the selection to the Atlantis Favorites folder (by default C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Favorites).
4. Release the mouse button.
5. Left-click “Create shortcuts here” in the popup menu.

B. In Atlantis.

1. Click “File | Favorites > Organize Favorites…
2. In the “Organize Favorites” dialog, click “Remove Obsolete”.
3. Close the dialog.

HTH.
Cheers,
Robert
