Page Numbering

Post by ToraScotia »

I’ve written a story of over 400 pages and as the first two pages contain a picture and an index, I want to start the page numbering at page 3, as number 1.

Now I have no problem at all in doing this in Atlantis Nova, but I cannot figure out how to do it under Atlantis Word.

I have checked the Help files and the forum, plus I have tried using a Header without finding the answer.

Can anyone offer a solution to this problem?

Hi,
In Word-compatible documents, page numbers are a section property. In other words, sections can be numbered independently.
In your case, you need to create a section which will start after your index and whose page numbering starts at “1”. You also need to suppress any page numbering that might be present on the preceding pages.

Here is what you can do.

1. Click in the document window to place the insertion point after your index.
2. Click “Insert | Break > Section Break > Next Page”.
3. Click “View | Header & Footer”.
4. On the Header & Footer special toolbar, click “Switch between header and footer” (third button from the right).
5. On the same toolbar, click the next button to the left to toggle “Same as previous” off.
6. Still on the Header & Footer special toolbar, click the leftmost button to “Insert Page Number”.
7. Press “Ctrl+R” if you want the page numbers to be right-aligned.
8. Still on the Header & Footer special toolbar, click the “Page numbering format” button (third from the left).
9. In the Page Numbering Format dialog, specify “1” as the starting value. OK out of the dialog.

The page numbering should start on page 1, right after your index page.

HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

Many thanks for your help and of course that was the answer.

As I wanted the numbers at the top of the page I kept them as a Header.

One thing that puzzles me however, why do we have to go down this route when Atlantis Nova is so much simpler?

Atlantis Nova supports a single scheme for page numbering. Of course, everything is very simple.

Yes, in the full version of Atlantis, things are a little bit trickier. But with the full version of Atlantis, you can design plenty of different page numbering schemes not possible in Atlantis Nova.
