Getting Rid of Headers/Footers

Post by Cheemag »

How to suppress headers & footers altogether so as to save paper?

I never need headers and footers, so it seems a pity to waste the space at the top and bottom of every page.

Similarly, how do I reduce the left and right margins for all new documents to around 1 cm left and right? I can do this for individual documents in File>Page Settings but it's tedious doing it for every document.

It would be nice if I could then get the horizontal and vertical lines which delimit the document space to correspond to the new limits.

Hi,
By default, all newly-created documents are based on the “Normal.rtf” template. You need to change the settings in that template if you want all new documents to be created accordingly. Here is how to proceed:

1. Choose “File | Document Templates…”
2. Select “Normal.rtf” in the list.
3. Open “Normal.rtf”.
4. Click “View | Header & Footer”
5. With the insertion point still within the Header, press Ctrl+A, then the Del key.
6. Choose “File | Page Settings…”
7. Change the page margins to suit your requirements (1 cm left and right margins in your case).
8. OK out of the Page Settings dialog.
9. Press Ctrl+S to save your changes, then close the template.

All newly-created documents should now be devoid of header or footer until you choose to run the “View | Header & Footer” command in them. Also their left and right page margins should be 1 cm.

Note that the horizontal and vertical lines which delimit the document space are visible on 2 conditions:

1. The “View | Print Layout” mode is on.
2. “View | Page Margin Borders” is on too.

HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

What you call "headers & footers" are actually the top & bottom margins of a document page.

Have you tried switching to the Draft view mode of Atlantis? When this mode is activated, the document contents are displayed as a continuous flow of text without page breaks or page margins.

OK, thanks. I'll have a look at it.
