Problems spellchecking UK English words

Post by andygrunt »

In the past few months I've noticed words being marked as misspelled even though I believe they are correctly spelt UK English words. For example the following are all marked as wrong:

centre, colour, organise, organised, organising

I know I could manually add these words as I come across them but that wouldn't be a proper fix. I've fiddled around a bit with the Spellcheck options, removing the American spellcheck dictionary and that makes things worse (so I've added it back). I've been through the onboard Help regarding spellchecking (er, bit confused by it to be honest) and have set everythig in sight to 'English (United Kingdom)' but no luck.

I've got a feeling I've probably changed a setting somewhere in the past that's caused this so any help pointing me in the right direction will be appreciated.

Hi Andy,
Could you please do the following:
Click “Tools | Options…” > “Spellcheck” tab > “Spellcheckers & Dictionaries…” button.
In the “Spellcheckers & Dictionaries” dialog, select “UK English” in the “Spellcheckers” box.
In the “Main dictionaries” box, you should have two different dictionaries:
1. English.zlx
2. UK.zlx
If “UK.zlx” is missing, it might be a good idea to reinstall Atlantis. Please use the latest official version just released.
Alternatively, you could press the “Add…” topmost button in the “Spellcheckers & Dictionaries” dialog, and add “English (British).asc”.
HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

Hi,

It's already set as you describe.

The 'Spellcheckers & Dictionaries' dialogue was set to 'English (British)' and both the uk.zlx and english.zlx files appear in the 'Main dictionries' box. I had installed the latest version just yesterday.

Anything else I can try?

Thanks.

Please press Ctrl+A in your document, then choose the "Format | Language..." menu command, and apply "English (United Kingdom)" to the selection.
If British words are still reported as misspelt, please send your document to support@AtlantisWordProcessor.com. Please also choose the "Tools | Options..." menu command of Atlantis, and save your Atlantis settings to an INI file. Please send that INI file to support@AtlantisWordProcessor.com too.

Hi Andy,
Could you please try this:
1. Click “File | Document Templates…”
2. Select “Normal.rtf” and open it.
3. Press “Ctrl+A”.
4. Click “Format | Default Language…”
5. In the “Default Language” dialog, check “Associate all new text with the following language”, and select “UK English” in the drop-down.
6. OK out of the dialog.
7. Press “Ctrl+S” to save your default template.
8. Press “Ctrl+W” to close the template.
9. Press “Ctrl+N” to create a new document.
10. Type the UK English words that were previously reported as wrongly spelt.
Is the problem still present?
HTH.

Yep. The settings were already set to your suggestions anyway but I went through your steps (just in case) and got the same result.

Admin, I also tried your suggestions with no joy - those two files will be on their way to you shortly.

Thanks for the files. The settings file is OK. The same regarding your test document. The problem must be within the spellcheck files on your hard disk.

Could you please email the following files:

C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Spellcheck\English (British).asc
C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Spellcheck\Lex\uk.zlx
C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Spellcheck\Lex\userdicen.tlx

Thanks for the files. The problem is that your "C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Spellcheck\English (British).asc" contains incorrect language ID. It should be 2057 not 0.

Have you manually edited that file?

Please close Atlantis (if it is running), and open your "English (British).asc" in Notepad or any other text editor. Replace "Language=0" with "Language=2057". Save changes, and launch Atlantis.

I haven't touched it. I didn't even know it existed until you mentioned it yesterday. Perhaps my trying different things with the language settings in Atlantis changed it?

Anyway, I just made that change and it seems to have worked - i.e. those UK words are no longer marked as misspelled. Thanks :D

One more thing though... When I opened 'English (British).asc' in notepad, I noticed a couple of lines were pointing at my C drive but I recently manually moved Atlantis to my D drive. Should I change 'C' to 'D' on those lines?

Many thanks.

Below is the default content of "English (British).asc":

[General]
Language=2057

[Fixed Lexicons]
Count=2
Lexicon1=english.zlx
Lexicon2=uk.zlx

[Editable Lexicons]
Count=1
Lexicon1=userdicen.tlx

There is no need in full paths in this file if all the spellcheck files are stored in their default subfolders under the home folder of Atlantis.

It seems that you have two home folders of Atlantis on different drives. It is preferable to keep only one copy (home folder).

I only have one Atlantis home directory. I assume the confusion came as a result of my moving it from my C drive to D as detailed in this previous thread.

I cannot reproduce any problem with the spellcheckers when I move the home folder of Atlantis to a new drive. Atlantis is supposed to assign a nil language code to a given spellchecker when its .asc file does not contain a valid language code.

If the language code within your "English (British).asc" keeps resetting to 0, please tell us the actions that lead to this problem.
