Epub to Mobi

Post by darkuser »

I love using Atlantis for epub files. However, I've tried three methods to convert to mobi and all of them have the same issue. (Kindlegen, mobi previewer, or using the converter in KDP itself)

I don't select embed fonts during the conversion; I leave the default of "save but don't embed." The problem is the font are not showing up on the kindle or kindle reader as the default font that device uses. I changed the font a few times in the word processor and tried creating a new book to see what would happen, it it seems to be acting as if it's embedding whatever font I choose. I've searched the Internet to no avail.

I'd love to make Atlantis my one-stop shop for converting all my files, but as it is, I'm having to use another method for creating mobi files directly from a word doc and not the epub Atlantis creates.

If you choose “save but don't embed”, Atlantis suggests using the fonts that have been used in the source document. But the e-readers do what they want with the suggestions. If they have inbuilt fonts that are identical, they normally use them. But quite a number of e-readers offer their own choice of fonts to display the e-books with. You cannot control which font your readers will choose for the display of your e-books.

I want the ereader to make the choice. The problem with the conversion is when I review it on the kindle or previewer, it's not using the default fonts kindle normally uses for book files. I don't want to control the font or embed one. The conversion seems to be doing that, however.

Did you try “Don’t save” from the Fonts drop-down? If I choose “Don’t save”, and the source document is formatted in Times New Roman, the resulting MOBI file displays with “Georgia” in the Kindle Previewer. “Georgia” is the only choice of font I have in the Kindle Previewer, version 2.94.
