Printer problem using windows 7

Post by rgd22 »

I am using the latest version of Atlantis WP 1.6.6.1 and am having problem with printing. My OS is Win 7. All other apps print fine but Atlantis WP. The error message I receive is :

"Before you can perform printer related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer. Do you want to install a printer now?" (Yes | No )

I already have a printer installed as well as the MS XPS & PDF printer drivers. Even if I do click yes, it adds another printer and still does not print from it.

I have tried restarting the print spooler, running Atlantis with "factory" settings, adding & deleting printers but nothing seem to work. Please help.

This error message is displayed by Windows, not by Atlantis.

Do you print documents through the "File | Print..." menu command of Atlantis (or by pressing Ctrl+P)?

Does Atlantis display the "Print dialog" where you can choose a printer (physical or virtual)?

What is your default printer in Windows?

Have you tried restarting your Windows?

You seem to have multiple printing tools and devices in your system. Have you tried printing on another system?

I have tried both ways of printing (Ctrl+P & file, print menu). Atlantis does not display the print dialog, it just displays the error message "Before you can perform printer related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer. Do you want to install a printer now?" (Yes | No )

My default printer in Windows is my fineprint driver (sometimes I change default to my PDF printer driver). I have tried shutting down & restarting windows to no avail. I just tried it on another system (WinXP based) & seems to print fine. I am not sure if or how the OS is causing the problem though.

Thanks for your help...

I run Windows 7 Pro and have no problem with the Print dialog, so I would say it is not a specific Window 7 problem. It sounds like you have several printers and even if it didn't find the default one it should find another one. Is there another computer in the house that could be reserving them?

Please have a look at the following thread:
Re: Can't print: "Before you can perform print-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document

Is your PC on a network?
Maybe you could try changing your default printer to a real hardware printer first. Then try to select FinePrint from the Atlantis Print dialog.

Also here is from before you can perform print-related tasks such as page setup or rpinting a doc, you need to install a printer:
Solution: change your default printer (or set one if you don't have one), and then, if you like, change it back again. Just the act of modifying the default printer setting seems to have reset something that allowed Acrobat to start printing again.
And from Printer Service Only Working For Admins
On my remote server, only admins have access to printers. It's like the printing service just stops for non-admins, the "printing devices" page is completely blank. Since non-admins then don't have any printers in their list, if they go to print anything they'll get the message "Before you can perform print-related tasks, you need to install a printer". What could cause this? I'm not aware of any settings that can kill the spool for specific groups or users. On this server there are MANY network printers, so it's not a problem with just redirected printers, it's the entire print service.
HTH.

Thanks, Robert. Your suggestion & link (Printer Service Only Working For Admins ) worked out for me. I reset the print spooler and reset admin permissions to get it to print.

Thanks again,

Thank you for the feedback, rgd22.

Windows sometimes works in very cryptic ways…
