First, the latest version of Atlantis is version 1.6.5.13. You should update your version of Atlantis. Here is how to:
1. Open Atlantis.
2. Click “Help | Check for updates…”
3. Follow the instructions.
Now when you get a message saying that another program is editing the current document, this means that the document currently open in Atlantis is also already open in another application. You should close the instance of the document that is open in the other application.
Just out of curiosity, try this, if you have not done so already.
Close Atlantis.
Find the problem file with whatever file manager you use.
Right-click on the file name (or however your file manager handles copying) and copy the file. Paste it into ANOTHER folder, and then rename it (right-click and rename).
Now try to open this "new" renamed file in Atlantis.
Does that work?
I do not know about the inner workings of Atlantis, but in Microsoft Word something that can cause this problem is that a copy of the file is left open (the file with the tilde ~ before the name) when the program does not shut down properly and fails to close the open file. I have had this happen in Word 2010 a number of times, even when I had exited the open file properly. Also, sometimes Word just seems not to get the message and still thinks that a document is open, even though you have closed it. I have always been able to straighten this out by closing Word and restarting it.
You may have something similar going on in Atlantis. I do not know if Atlantis opens a temporary file somewhere (Word does it in the same folder as the location of the file that you are working on and puts the ~ in front of the name).
Try what I suggested and see if it works.
Maybe Robert or the admin will tell us whether Atlantis creates a temp file that could be related to your problem.
This might happen if some third-party application is blocking access to the file that is open in Atlantis, or that you are trying to open in Atlantis. This is generally due to some “security” application not giving appropriate “administrative” rights to Atlantis. It could be an antivirus, a firewall, something like that. Please check that Atlantis is not blocked in some way by your antivirus or firewall.
Which Windows system are you running? Which “security” applications are you using?
Roland, your suggestion worked just fine. However I have no idea if it solved the problem because this morning it seemed to have done an Oral Roberts and healed itself.
Robert, I'm on Win7 with Avast and CCLeaner.
But at this point I think I'll wait and see if it happens again. Thanks.
This could not be caused by CCleaner unless you run the CCleaner cleaning process when Atlantis is running and using its temp folder.
On the other hand, this might very well be caused by Avast. Here is from Avast Internet Security:
Real-time shields.
The real-time shields are the most important part of the program, as they are working continuously to prevent your computer from becoming infected. They monitor all your computer?s activity, checking all programs and files in real-time ? i.e. at the moment a program is started or whenever a file is opened or closed.
Please, make sure that Avast is not “sandboxing” Atlantis one way or the other. Some of the Atlantis users had a similar problem with the WebRoot security program.
For example, WebRoot, Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Defender, and most such security applications, have advanced settings allowing end-users to specify which applications they regard as “safe”.
In Microsoft Security Essentials, you can exclude files and locations from its real-time protection:
Atlantis is probably the most harmless application you’ll ever run on your system. If you run into the same kind of trouble in the future, please register Atlantis as a safe application, or give it all necessary authorizations. Note that you might have to restart your system for such changes to take effect.
Note that “C:\Program Files (x86)\Atlantis\Atlantis.exe” is the path used by Atlantis on 64-bit Windows 7. If you are running a 32-bit version of Windows 7, the path will be “C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Atlantis.exe” instead.
