Word count and hyphenation

Post by zhivago »

Atlantis counts hyphenated words wrongly, for example "mother-in-law" is counted as 3 words. Dates like "31-Jan-11" are also counted as 3 words, and as my documents tend to be full of these dates it is causing a massive word-count discrepancy for me. MS Word counts hyphenated words and dates as just 1 word each, which makes better sense.

I've been looking for a way to adjust the way word counts are made in Atlantis, but can't find any settings for it. Any way to fix it?

There is no standard saying that any hyphenated compound should be treated as one word. As a matter of fact, there are opposite views on this issue.

I am sorry, but there is no way to adjust the way word counts are made in the present version of Atlantis Word Processor. But as a workaround, you could temporarily remove all the hyphens in your document (this can be easily done with the Find/Replace tool of Atlantis), get a word count, then undo.

Thanks for the reply and the suggested workaround.

I hope this can be changed in the next version. I know there are certain phrasal hyphenated constructions like "one-in-a-million" that shouldn't necessarily be treated as one word, but there are relatively few of those in an average document. Ordinary hyphenated words like "co-operate" (that's how I spell it anyway) should definitely count as one word and as there are likely to be more of these in any document, then counting as one word per compound has to be the best way.

In the meantime I'll continue to do my word counts in Microsoft Word.
