Auto capitalization after punctuation

Post by mhender668 »

With regard to auto capitalization at the end of a sentence, it does not seem to be possible to add an exception for anything other than a period. I would like to add an exception for punctuation, such as ? and !.

So, in dialogue, I write "Blab, blah, blah?" he asked. "He" in this case should not be capitalized, but auto caps does it, and I can't make an exception.

Atlantis has the "Don't capitalize after" list of exceptions. The list does not include individual punctuation signs. Each item in this list is supposed to be of the following format: "<word>+<punctuation sign>". Atlantis would not capitalize a letter following any item from the list.

If you added "blah?" (without quotes) to the exception list, Atlantis would not capitalize "he" in your example.

I understand the problem you are experiencing. But quotation marks denote not only direct speech but also ordinary quotations. Capitalization is required after quotations, but it is not always needed after direct speech.

Regrettably the AutoCorrect of Atlantis could not find out if a given text enclosed between quotation marks is a quotation or direct speech. If a sentence-terminating punctuation sign (. ! ?) is followed by a quotation mark, Atlantis performs capitalization if there was no quotation mark.

I afraid there could not be a fully automatic solution for this problem. But you can easily undo individual automatic corrections made by Atlantis. Just press Ctrl+Z after an automatic capitalization (or any other automatic correction) to undo it.

Thanks for your response. I don't expect Atlantis to be able to distinguish automatically. All I want to be able to do is to create an exception. In fact, as there may be times when the next word should be capitalized after ?" (although rarely), the exception should be specific. So, what I want could be accomplished simply by typing into the exception box ?" she and ?" he. Even if I excepted ?" it would satisfy the requirements of writers 99% of the time.

Such exceptions are not possible in Atlantis. But since ?" and !" in most cases indicate a direct speech, Atlantis will not capitalize first letter after these combinations of punctuation signs. Please click here for details.
