Hidden text

Post by ckorrol »

Hi:

I would like to be able to format text as "Hidden" and show on the screen but not print. This is a feature found in Softmaker and it is quite useful for me as I make notes in my records which are private and are not to be printed in a report.

Atlantis is more fun to use than Softmaker and I use it every chance I get but cannot use it in business because of the privacy issue noted above.

Thanks for your attention.

It's not fully what you want but as a temp' measure you could set the ink colour of the secret text to white.

Hi,
Note that I assume that your documents are written in US English.

Here is a workaround you could use.

1. Whenever you enter text that you would like to remain “hidden”, select it and format it with the “none” language.
2. When you want to print the document, press “Ctrl+Home” to place the insertion cursor at the top of the document.
3. Then press “Ctrl+F”.
4. In the Find dialog, clear the “Find” box, check the “Format” option, and choose “US English” as the language to search for (use the second icon button from the left).
5. Press “Find and Select All”.
6. When all the US English text is selected, press “Ctrl+P” to open the Print dialog.
7. In the Print dialog, click the “Selection” radio button. Adjust all other suitable printing options. OK out of the dialog to print the selected text.

The unselected fragments of text that you marked as belonging to the “none” language will not get printed.

Non-printing text

Thank you for a very clever work around. It does work. Now, I would like to be able to apply this as a Style to selected text. As far as I can tell, the style creation menu does not allow a change in language. Any thoughts?

Hi,
Here is another possible workaround.
1. Whenever you enter text that you would like to mark as “hidden”, select it and format it with a special style with any suitable properties. You could call it “Hidden”.
2. When you want to print the document without the hidden bits, press “Ctrl+Home” to place the insertion cursor at the top of the document.
3. Then press “Ctrl+F”.
4. In the Find dialog, clear the “Find” box, check the “Format” option, and choose “Hidden” as the style to search for (use the rightmost icon button).
5. Press “Find and Select All”.
6. When all the text formatted with the “Hidden” style is selected, press the Del key to remove it temporarily.
7. Print the document as usual.
8. When the document is printed, press “Ctrl+Z” to undo the removal of the “hidden” parts.

Non printing text

Post by ckorrol »

Robert:

Again, my thanks. I've come up with a similar work around that is perhaps a little easier, but it involves using a macro (Macro Express).

I format the text as you suggest, calling it "hidden" and having a blue color to distinguish it from other text.

Prior to printing, I then find all instances of the "hidden" text and use a macro to convert the selection(s) to "none" language. Then I print as suggested in your first work around. This obviates the need to delete any text and the potential for forgetting to restore the deleted text.

I hope this is clear.

Hi Chuck,
You don’t need a macro utility to do that.
When you have launched the Atlantis Ctrl+F dialog and found all instances of your “hidden” style, these are automatically selected as a multiple selection. At that point, you only need to apply the “none” language coding to the current multiple selection.
After all instances have been marked with the “none” language coding, and you want to print the document, press “Ctrl+Home” to place the insertion cursor at the top of the document.

Then press “Ctrl+F” again.
In the Find dialog, clear the “Find” box, check the “Format” option, and choose “US English” as the language to search for (use the second icon button from the left).
Press “Find and Select All”.
When all the US English text is selected, press “Ctrl+P” to open the Print dialog.
In the Print dialog, click the “Selection” radio button. Adjust all other suitable printing options. OK out of the dialog to print the selected text.

Robert:

Again, thanks. You're right, of course. However the macro is only one combination keystroke, and the way you suggest is a few more. However, this is a mere quibble.

The important things are:

1. I am able to accomplish the task

2. There is a very helpful user community member out there who generously shares his time and expertise, for which I am very grateful.
