Spell Checker Problem

Post by Getreal »

Dear Sir,

I am writing in regard to the add-in spell checkers. I have Zone Alarm installed and there is a problem with the file extension you use (.zlx) for the add-in spell checkers. Zone Alarm that sees the file extensions .zlx and since this is the default extension that Zone Alarm uses in order to disable possible threats to the computer, i.e., viruses, it considers the add-in dictionary files disabled threats.

This is how Zone Alarm works: When Zone Alarm detects a threat from a virus, etc., it (Zone Alarm) changes the extension of the file to .zlx so that the file/virus cannot run. So any file with a .zlx extension is considered by Zone Alarm as a previously found virus and hence cannot be unlocked. No matter how many times we try, the add-on dictionaries will never work as long as they are using the .zlx extension. This is a conflict with Zone Alarm. I've already tried renaming the files extension, with Zone Alarm off, however, Zone Alarm continues to lock these files.

This looks like a wonderful program, however, until the conflict with Zone Alarm is fixed, it will be unusable to a lot of us.

In order to verify this, if you will install Zone Alarm on your computer and try to use the add-on dictionaries yourself, you will experience the problem.

Please let us know if you will be looking into this problem as I would love to purchase Atlantis for my word processing needs.

Respectfully

Getreal

I am using ZoneAlarm too. I never experienced such problems. "My" ZoneAlarm never locked the Atlantis lexicons.

Could you explain how to reproduce the problem (step-by-step)? Have you changed the initial settings of ZoneAlarm? What are your current settings?

I have a capture of Zone Alarm if that would help.

Also, I can provide you with a screen capture of how the files look. Would this be acceptable to you?

By the way, I've purchased the program and would love to be able to use the add-in dictionaries.

Thanks!

Getreal

Found the problem but wondering if the work around is safe or if all purchasers and users of Atlantis will want to go to this extent when using Zone Alarm Pro.

It seems as though Zone Alarm Pro is using the .zlx extension for mailsafe to protect email.

If you uninstall Atlantis and Zone Alarm Pro, clean out your registry and then reinstall Atlantis first, then reinstall Zone Alarm Pro, you will be able to use the add-in Dictionaries. Zone Alarm Pro sees that the file extension .zlx is in use by another program and will not associate it with mailsafe. Is this safe?

Hopefully the writer of Atlantis will be able to address and correct this, my money says he can.

If anyone has any other suggestions, please let us know!

Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

Getreal, getreal@raex.com
I could confirm my previous words: ZoneAlarm does not lock ZLX-files created by other applications. ZoneAlarm associates itself with the ZLX file extension. But this does not mean that Atlantis could not use its ZLX lexicons.

As I understand, you were attempting to perform some operation on Atlantis add-on dictionaries by double-clicking their files in Windows Explorer. But you might never have to do this. Atlantis never associates itself with the ZLX file extension. So Atlantis would never react on double-clicking ZLX files.
If you double-click a ZLX file, ZoneAlarm would tell you that this file is locked. But this is not right because this file was not created by ZoneAlarm. Regrettably ZoneAlarm is not smart enough (it would be better if it checked whether a particular ZLX file contains a VBS script).

If you wish to install an add-on dictionary to Atlantis, you should follow these instructions.
A link to this page is available from the Add-on Spellcheckers.
