Default Read/Save Directory

Post by Russell Adams »

I know I change the default read/save directory using Tools/Options, but this is often frustrating and results in files being stored in places I don't expect.

I use Atlantis rather than Word or Open Office for its speed and reliability. I trust Atlantis with my documents. I use it mainly for writing short stories and nevels. I often have several stories I'm working on open at one time. I can save to the same file I opened with control-S but when I update the date in the file name, I have to navigate back to the base directory for each story. Accidents happen.

I wish there could be an option to remember each documents home directory from which it was opened. In fact, I would prefer this to be default behavior rather than specifying a default document that applies to all document reads and saves.

So long as I'm here, I'd like to throw my support to the possibility of having separate word counts for different parts (sections) of a document. I write my novels in single files and would love to be able to specify a global wordcount field for the whole novel and sectional wordcounts for each chapter or scene.

And, just to get everything off my chest at one time, I really, really, really wish Atlantis had a table capability.

If I understand you correctly, you change the document's filename through the "File | Save As..." command. If the "Tools | Options... > Load / Save > Use Document Folder" box is checked, this command initially suggests to save the active document to the "Document Folder" (you can change the "Document Folder" on the "Load / Save" tab of the "Tools | Options..." dialog of Atlantis) .

Please just uncheck the "Tools | Options... > Load / Save > Use Document Folder" box. The "File | Save As..." command of Atlantis will automatically suggest to save to the current folder of the active document.

Regrettably there is no "word count of a section" or "word count of a text fragment" field type in RTFs/DOCs/DOCXs. It would be fairly easy to implement such custom field types in Atlantis. But storing them within RTFs, DOCXs, and especially DOCs would be quite problematic. In addition, other word processors could not display such custom fields correctly.

So it seems that the only way to have a "section word count" is by counting words in a section manually, then inserting the result to the required location within a document. If you need to find out the word count of a text fragment, just select this fragment, then choose the "Tools | Word Count..." menu command.
