How do I paste text so it takes on the right Style?

Post by andygrunt »

There's a little effect that I've been noticing for ages but not thought to ask about (for some reason) until now...

I often copy and paste (using Ctrl+C & Ctrl+V) pieces of text from somewhere (usually either from an email or a web page) into Atlantis. The odd thing is that sometimes when I paste the text in, it correctly assumes the properties of the style into which it's being pasted (which is what I want to happen) and sometimes doesn't.

When it doesn't, selecting the text and re-applying the style sometimes transforms the new text as expected (i.e. transforming it into the style) and sometimes only partially changes it (usually setting the indents etc correctly but leaving me to change the font and size manually).

I can't detect any particular pattern to this (it doesn't only apply to a particular Style, for example) it just seems to sometimes work and sometimes not.

Any ideas?

Hi Andy,
Instead of Ctrl+V, use the “Paste As Environment” command, i.e. Ctrl+Alt+Ins.
When you use Ctrl+V, you get a mix of the original Web page or email style and of the target style in your document, with as you noticed, rather unpredictable results.
HTH.

You star! Thanks Robert.

Now all I have to do is remember that key combo :)

Shouldn't that option appear in the edit/paste menu?

Hi Andy,
It is present as Edit > Paste Special… > Paste as “Plain Text” or “Plain Unicode Text” depending on the Windows clipboard actual contents.
The most practical if you’re going to use that command often is to place the corresponding icon on your toolbars if it isn’t already there (Tools | Toolbars… > All Commands > Paste As Environment).

I love icons, me.

Consider it placed.

Thanks.
