Creating custom dictionaries?

Post by Max_Quordlepleen »

Can I create a custom dictionary by saving a text file wordlist with whatever extension is used by Atlantis spellcheckers? Or must I add each word individually?

Yes, you can. Your wordlist must be a TXT file. Each line of this file must be a separate word.
This file must be sorted in ascending order (you could use the Edit|Special|Sort Paragraphs (Ascending) main menu command of Atlantis).

To "install" your custom dictionary (your wordlist), choose the Tools|Options... menu command, click the Spellcheck tab, click the Spellcheck Systems & Dictionaries... button, highlight the desired spellcheck system within the Spellcheck Systems: box, click the Add... below the User Dictionaries box to add your wordlist to the highlighted spellchecker.

You could add custom dictionaries of MS Word in the same way.

That's great, thank you. I used to think Atlantis 0.7 was a handy little tool, but Ocean Mind ROCKS! Keep up the excellent work.

Therein lies the problem, it seems. My list of around 1840 words has at least 150 to 250 of those words with accented characters. When I convert the list to a text file, I lose the accented letters. Is there a workaround for this? ???

Which was a document format of your original word list?
Which tool did you use for converting?

My word list was originally a WordPerfect 9 document, and I simply selected "save as" *.txt The font then became Courier, and lost all the accented characters. I decided not to bother, and have opened the source document (containing the accented words) in Atlantis and am manually adding them to the user dictionary through Atlantis' own spellchecker.

I think you could try another, simpler way.

Open the original document with your WordPerfect. Then save this document as RTF. Then open this RTF document with Atlantis, and save it as TXT (Atlantis never converts accented characters to their unaccented equivalents).

Hope WordPerfect converts to RTF properly, without losses.

Awesome! That worked perfectly. In fact, Atlantis recognised a couple of accentred characters correctly that the original WordPerfect document had misrecognised. You have truly created an incredible piece of work here. Thanks!
