How do I move Atlantis to another drive?

Post by andygrunt »

I'm running Atlantis on my rapidly aging laptop and my C drive is getting full and needs a bit of a clearout. So, I'd like to move Atlantis from my C drive to my D drive (which has a bit more space to play with).

Is there a way to move Atlantis so that I keep all my preferences, writing times, favourites and so on?

Thanks.

The standard version of Atlantis Word Processor is not as "mobile" as the portable version of Atlantis. But you can still move Atlantis to another drive. Just move the home folder of Atlantis (by default, "C:\Program Files\Atlantis\") to the "D:" drive (use your file manager). But please note that some features of Atlantis that rely on explicitly specified file paths might need to be reconfigured. In addition the uninstaller of Atlantis will be unable to automatically remove this copy of Atlantis from your system.

Thanks for the answer.

It doesn't sound quite as painless as I was hoping. I think I'll leave until I have no other choice.

Possibly this move will be completely "painless". This depends on your Atlantis settings.

Maybe I'll pluck up the courage, bite the bullet and take the plunge (Unwanted phrase or cliche alert!) in the next few days.

You can always make a backup of your original Atlantis folder. Just ZIP the entire "C:\Program Files\Atlantis\" folder before moving it to the "D" drive. In case of problems with Atlantis on drive "D", you could always revert to the backuped version of the home folder of Atlantis on drive "C". But I think that there will be no need to restore the home folder of Atlantis on drive "C". The worst thing that could happen is a message from Atlantis saying that it cannot open some noncritical file. But most probably everything will work correctly if you simply move the home folder of Atlantis to another drive. The "non-portable" version of Atlantis is still quite portable.

That's pretty much what intended to do if/when I go for it.

Would the move cause any problems the next time I install a new version of Atlantis (to the new D drive location)? I'm just wondering if the uninstall pointing to one place (C) might cause problems with the install of the next version (to D).

There should be no new problems. You will only have to direct the setup file of a new version of Atlantis to the new home folder of Atlantis (I mean you will have to specify the proper destination folder on drive "D"). This will have to be done only once. The setup file will remember the new home folder.

Ok, I'll give it a go once I've finished the thing I'm currently writing - probably tomorrow.

Thanks.

I thought you and anyone else considering moving their Atlantis installation might like an update.

I moved Atlantis over to my D drive as suggested and fired it up. It worked with no problems or dialogue boxes popping up asking where any files were.

The next day, I installed the latest Beta to the new location on D, again, with no problems and it continues to work fine. :D

Thanks for the help.
