Why don't the numbers line up?

Post by 357mag »

This happens time and time again with Atlantis. When I make a numbered list the numbers do not want to always line up. Like I may have the first three double-digit numbers line up perfectly but when I add the fourth number the first digit is too far to the left or too far to the right so the list ends up looking skewed.

Makes no sense.

And I backspace and forward space to try and get the first digit to align but to no avail.

Hi,
When this happens, you might want to check the properties of the corresponding list:

1. In the document window, place the insertion point within a “faulty” list item.
2. If it isn’t already displaying, press F6 to activate the Control Board.
3. On the Control Board, click to show the “Lists” panel.
4. On the Control Board bottom toolbar, click the third button from the left (“Edit highlighted list format”).
5. In the “Edit List Format” dialog, make sure that the list properties include “Number left-aligned at:”.
6. OK out of the dialog.

If this is a recurrent problem, you might want to check the properties of your default numbered list. Here is how to do it:

1. Open the “Format | List” dialog.
2. In the List dialog, click to activate the “Simple numbered” tab.
2. In the List Gallery below, click to select the “Default numbered list” (it has a capital “D” in the top right-hand corner).
3. Change the corresponding properties as suitable.
4. OK out of the dialog.

Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Robert

Is your numbered list automatic, ie does Atlantis automatically adds new numbered items to your list as you press Enter?

If so, when creating the first item of a new list, please press the Tab key after typing the first list number not the Space key.

If you meant something else, please attach a sample document to your reply.

One document uses numbers but it's not just on the far left. I've got numbers also to the right. I'm just putting the numbers in by hand on the right cuz I can't figure out how to do it automatically.

Another document called Dimarzio Tone Guide you can see the numbers don't line up when you look at the HS-2 and the Virtual Heavy Blues. They don't line up like the other numbers I typed above them. I'm also doing this by hand.

Well I think I found a solution. I used the Tab key instead of just hitting the space bar repeatedly. Seems to look much better now.

I don't quite understand why sometimes the space bar works for some numbers but other numbers it's off.

If you formatted your document "Working Song List.rtf" in "two columns", there would be no need in adding numbers manually. Please see the attached document.

You could not reliably align numbers with space characters because different characters (letters, digits) may have different widths. Yes, tab characters are meant exactly for this task - aligning text columns.
