Here's a wierd one
I noticed something strange that really isn't any problem as far as I can see. I bring it up just in case there are more adverse implications that I haven't noticed.
I'm using WordWeb as my thesaurus. When I select part of a word in Atlantis, e.g.,
spoken
right click, and choose Thesaurus from the pop-up menu, WordWeb comes up looking for "suddenlink." Now, SuddenLink just happens to be my Internet provider. This happens in every instance I've tried where part of the word was selected before invoking the thesaurus.

Robert,
I, too, have XP, SP3. However, it looks like maybe I jumped the gun here. When I rebooted my system and tried again I didn't get the same result. Now if I select part of a word and invoke the thesaurus, WordWeb comes up blank. (Although, I do wonder why Atlantis doesn't pass the highlighted portion of the word. It might, in fact, be a good word itself.) "Suddenlink" must have been lingering uninvited in memory somewhere, evilly sniggering and waiting to pounce when the opportunity arose.

Gentlemen,
I see a similar anomaly (though not identical). When I highlight an entire word and invoke Wordweb Pro it often (perhaps 25% of the time) will present the definition of the word prior to the one I selected. I also see Wordweb return a blank page occasionally. Since neither of these issues are present with iFinger, I assume it's a Wordweb idiosyncrasy.

Hi Robert,
Now that's strange--I just tried ten times to find partial words and Wordweb returned correct answers every time. I also asked it to find some partial words that were nonsense on their own. It came back with 'word not found'. On no occasion did it return a blank. I bet it would have done so If I tried enough times though. If I make multiple selections, Wordweb returns the last word selected.
Regards,
Paul

Actually Atlantis does not pass the word. If you want technical details on how all this works (or is supposed to work), have a look at http://www.deskperience.com/wordcapture ... turex.html
As you might know, WordWeb has a command to look up words in many text processing applications. This command can be invoked through a Ctrl+click or the Ctrl+Alt+W hot key of WordWeb. But if you mean the Thesaurus command of Atlantis (either the "Tools | Thesaurus..." main menu command, or its right-click counterpart), it does pass the current word or the selected word/phrase in Atlantis directly to WordWeb through the programming interface provided by WordWeb. When you use the Thesaurus command of Atlantis (not the proprietary command of WordWeb), Atlantis decides which text to pass to WordWeb. The Thesaurus command of Atlantis works in the following way:
- When you have a "whole words" selection (an entirely selected word or phrase), or when there is no selection but there is a proper word at the current caret position in Atlantis, the selected text or the current word is passed to WordWeb.
- When you have a multiple selection or non-"whole words" selection in your Atlantis document, Atlantis passes a "blank word" to WordWeb. WordWeb is supposed to display a "blank page" for a "blank word". But I do not rule out that it might display something else in such situations, depending on some conditions. In any case, Atlantis does not expect anything definite from WordWeb in such situations. It is obvious that you could not look up for multiple words simultaneously in the same WordWeb window. Also Atlantis ignores partially selected words because looking up word fragments makes no sense. "poke" is a proper English word but only when used on its own, not as a part of words like "spoken" or "poker". Looking up word fragments is as senseless as spellchecking word fragments.

I'm using v5.2. If I call Wordweb Pro using the the Atlantis thesarus icon, Wordweb displays the previous word searched for using the hotkey. If I use the hotkey (in my case ctrl+F11), Wordweb displays the currently selected word (most of the time).mikespeir wrote:I'm using WordWeb 5.52. I get the same result as Robert does. It's probably in how Atlantis passes the word rather than in how WordWeb receives it.
I shall therefore continue to use my hotkey as the preferred method, especially since my follow-on action is sometimes to summon iFinger with another hotkey.
Best regards,
Paul
