Copy & paste not working sometimes

Post by andygrunt »

Not a show stopper but I thought you'd want to hear about this problem...

There have been a few occasions when, for no apparent reason, I cannot copy and paste within Atlantis. i.e. I select some text, press Ctrl+C (or select it from the menus), move my cursor and press Ctrl+V and the text doesn't appear as it should. Note that in these circumstances 'Paste' is greyed out in the menus. Note also that when Atlantis is misbehaving in this way, cutting with Ctrl+X (or via the menus) also doesn't work.

Oddly, cut and paste continues to work in other software during this time. Also, I can sometimes (but not always) successfully paste something I've copied from outside Atlantis.

This effect has appeared yesterday and today and one or two times previously. Unfortunately, I have no idea what causes it. I've just tried exiting and re-running Atlantis and that seems to have fixed it.

I run Win XP Home Edition (SP3) on a laptop.

Hi Andy,
Are you using some kind of clipboard monitoring utility? Or a third-party program that stores clipboard entries?

Nope - just plain, vanilla Windows XP clipboard.

When the "Paste" button/command of Atlantis remains grayed out after you copy new data to the clipboard, this can only mean that Atlantis is not notified of new clipboard data. This can happen when the chain of clipboard-monitoring applications in your Windows gets corrupted by some incorrectly functioning application. The only way to fix the chain in such situations is by restarting Atlantis.

By the way, do you launch Windows Media Player after copying to the clipboard?

Maybe on some other occasion but certainly not today or yesterday.

Edit: (Just in case this is useful info') More often than not, the only other application that will be running would be Outlook Express.

Do you have other applications running in the background?
Have you recently installed any new software or updated existing software?

Well, it's Windows - there's always something running in the background.

I regularly update software but as I first noticed this effect some months back, I've no idea if that caused the problem or which update might have caused it (if any). I did update to SP3 a while back - could that cause a problem?

I did not mean standard Windows services. I meant applications that have buttons on the Windows Taskbar (including its system tray).

No standard services of Windows could modify the chain of clipboard-monitoring applications. Anyway since you cannot identify the "offending application", and this problem happens only occasionally, it can be fixed by restarting Atlantis. Regrettably I cannot suggest a better solution.

Fair enough - I just wanted to bring it to your attention.
