Atlantis will not single space!

Post by 357mag »

I downloaded some song lyrics and pasted them into a document. Now I'm doing some minor editing. The lyrics are single-spaced. Even the single-space button is depressed.

But for some stupid reason when I add some additional lyrics, Atlantis will not single-space them. It looks more like 1.5 or double-spaced. What is the reason for this behavior? The single-space button is already depressed. Should be simple.

Spacing between paragraphs/lines is controlled through multiple attributes of the Paragraph format. Please choose the "Format | Paragraph..." menu command of Atlantis, and check if the space before/after paragraph attributes are nonzero.

You could also send your document to support@AtlantisWordProcessor.com.

Hi,
Song lyrics and poem lines are often separated by line breaks.
As you probably know, in modern word processors, only paragraphs can be single or double spaced or can have space before or after. “Lines” created with line breaks (Shift+Enter) cannot have spacing.
I suggest you replace all line breaks with paragraph end marks in your lyrics. Then apply any appropriate space before or after values.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Robert

I highlighted the additional lines that I entered, and then I went into the Page menu and it said it was 5 pt.

I changed that to read 0 pt. and it solved the problem. Now I have single spacing.

I don't understand why though. I should have single spacing just by hitting the single spacing button. I'm not talking about space between paragraphs. I mean spacing between lines.

The original text was single spaced too. So I think this is weird.

Hi 357mag,
You seem to be mistaken about what are “lines”, “paragraphs”, “Single Spacing” and “Spacing Before/After” to a word processor. And about all of this works together.
As a rule, word processors have their own definition and perception of what are “lines” and “paragraphs”. To a word processor, a “line” is a fragment of text that ends with a “line break” (“Shift+Enter” hot key), a “paragraph” is a fragment of text that ends with a “paragraph end mark” (“Enter” hot key). And successive “lines” ending with “line breaks” are automatically considered as being an integral part of the “paragraph” that ends with the next “paragraph end mark”. If you switch the “Special Symbols” mode on (“pilcrow” image on the toolbars or “Ctrl+Shift+8” hot key), you’ll be able to see the line-break and end-of-paragraph markers.

Now you say that by changing “5pts” to “0pt” in “the Page menu”, you achieved what you wanted. I assume that you meant to say that you changed the “Spacing Before/After” values in the “Paragraph Format” dialog (“Ctrl+Shift+G” hot key).

I suspect that your lyrics have been written with “line breaks” all along. When you press “Enter” to create a new “line” in Atlantis, you actually create a new “paragraph”. That paragraph automatically has the properties of the current paragraph. So if the current paragraph in your lyrics was formatted with, let’s say, a “Spacing Before” value of 5pts and a “Spacing After” value of 5pts, the new paragraph that you create by pressing the Enter key also has those same properties. And the new “line” in your lyrics, which actually is a new “paragraph”, also has a “Spacing Before” value of 5pts and a “Spacing After” value of 5pts.

If you want to avoid this and keep the “Single Line Spacing” look in all your “lines”, you have to create new “lines” in your lyrics by using the “Shift+Enter” hot key, and not the “Enter” key alone.

Alternatively, you can do what I suggested in my previous post, that is replace all line breaks with paragraph end marks and set all the newly-created paragraphs with any appropriate “Spacing Before/After” values. With this method, all “lines” in your lyrics are actually “paragraphs” with individual “Spacing Before/After” values.

Hope this clarifies matters.
Cheers,
Robert
