Word to Atlantis doc conversion?

I'm getting .doc and .rtf files from Word that can't be opened in Atlantis v1.6.1.9. The file contains text and images. What can I do to open these files? Is there a better file format to use coming out of Word?

Could you please be more specific? Do you get error messages from Atlantis when you try to open your documents?
