File Order on Opening

Post by Peter Merton »

I find it very useful to call up files which are displayed in date order, most recent to oldest. In this way, files I have worked on over a period of a couple of days are displayed at the top of the list. When opening files one has the option of clicking on the View Menu and choosing to display by Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List or Details.
Is it possible that if one chooses Details and sorts by most recent down that Atlantis would keep that as the default display until changed?
Also handy in deleting older files which have served their purpose and/or have been backed up suitably.
Yes, I could use the Favorites option, but this is already being used for a set of documents I constantly refer to.

Regrettably Atlantis has no control over the options offered by the left top toolbar of the "Open document" dialog. This toolbar belongs to Windows Explorer. The problem is that Windows does not offer a programmatic way to control this area of the "Open document" dialog. I am sorry, but Atlantis could not keep the file view type and sort order when you change them in the "Open document" dialog of Atlantis.

Hi,
The only way to achieve what you want is to open files in Atlantis with drag & drop from your file manager.
If you use a good file manager like xplorer² Pro (http://zabkat.com), you have the opportunity to save folder views and to display handy file previews very easily.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Robert

File Opening

What a pity. Both Word and Excel can do this.

Peter.

MS Office does not use the standard Windows routines to display the Open/Save dialogs. MS Word and MS Excel use their proprietary dialogs for these purposes. Being a much smaller software, Atlantis Word Processor cannot afford overriding such mechanisms of Windows. After all, this would hardly make any sense. Bloating Atlantis with such "clone features" would bring almost no benefits to the Atlantis users. But Atlantis would become a much heavier software package. Would it be a step in right direction for Atlantis and its users?

Please don’t regard my request above as a criticism of Atlantis. Far from it. I had no idea what it would involve. No problem. I’m pleased you pointed it out to me. Atlantis’ speed of operation and ease of use, and its user friendly performance is the reason I changed to Atlantis, and this is where I shall stay.
I can sort out my request by saving current documents with a zero preceding the filename. That way they’re always at the top of the list until finished with, when they will be saved without the prefix, or a 9 of their next stop is the recycle bin.
Best wishes, Peter. :D

Hi,

The free “FlashFolder” utility has a “Remember view mode” option. This option is off by default. But if you activate it, Atlantis will remember the folder view that you last used in its “File | Open…” dialog. In other words, if you open the Atlantis “File | Open…” dialog after installing “FlashFolder”, then choose the “Details” view, the “Details” view will automatically be activated when you reopen the same “File | Open…” dialog.

Here is from http://zett42.de/flashfolder/?page_id=3:

“FlashFolder enhances the file dialogs by providing the following functionality:

menu of recently used folders
editable menu of favorite folders
enlarges the common file dialogs to a configurable size (even non-resizable file dialogs of many programs)
automatically positions the dialogs at the center of the main program window or at the center of the screen
enlarges the directory- and file type drop-down fields so less scrolling is needed for them
persistent view mode for open/save dialog - e. g. if you select details view, it will be activated again the next time you open an open/save dialog
show the full path of the folder who’s content is currently displayed
quickly view “all files” (set *.* filter)
Total Commander® directory menu can be displayed instead of FlashFolders own favorites
editable Hotkeys for FlashFolder’s main functions.”

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Robert

I must admit that I was wrong. Actually there is an undocumented trick that allows to set/obtain view mode in Open/Save dialogs. The next release of Atlantis Word Processor will "remember" view mode of its Open/Save dialogs.

Feature Request

Post by Peter Merton »

Hi Robert
Thanks for the tip about Flashfolder. It works well, always opening in the last view selected. That’s a great help.
Thanks for taking the trouble to let me know about this utility.
I look forward to the modification in Atlantis when that version becomes available.
Regards, Peter.
