Spanish/Italian Keyboards
Spanish/Italian Keyboards
I am considering registering Atlantis for my daughter in college to use as a Spanish
word processor. But first I want to be sure it will do the accents and "enya" etc.
How do you change keyboards?

Tnx,
Bill
Re: Spanish/Italian Keyboards
Atlantis can be used for creating documents in any Western European, Central European, or Eastern European language. The Atlantis documents can contain mixed texts (a document contains texts in multiple languages).

Users from the Western Europe could type texts both in their native language and in English without any problem. But things are slightly more complex for those whose computers are configured for working on English texts only (I mean the keyboard settings).

In order to be able to type texts in languages that are not initially supported by your Windows, you could use the standard Windows mechanism of keyboard layouts. What is a keyboard layout? It assigns some layout specific characters from the corresponding language to the keys of your keyboard.
A keyboard layout makes your keyboard behave as it was the standard keyboard used by users in another country.
To install additional keyboard layouts, go to the Windows Control Panel, then double-click the Keyboard icon. Then you could easily toggle between different keyboard layouts in order to type text in the desired language.
When you type text in Atlantis, by default Atlantis automatically marks a newly typed text as belonging to the language of the current keyboard layout.

There are also alternative ways if you are going to use languages which use only a few additional (extended) characters in comparing to the standard English alphabet.

For example, there are additional utilities that allow to insert extended letters to any word processor.

Alternatively you could use the Atlantis “Insert | Symbol…” menu command to insert any character from the desired language.

Atlantis also offers another very flexible way for inserting extended characters.
This could be done through the AutoCorrect feature of Atlantis.
So let’s suppose you are using the standard English keyboard. But you also have to work on Spanish texts. So require the extended Spanish characters like these:
ó, ñ, á, ú

You could choose the “Tools | AutoCorrect Options…” command. Then add the following entries to the “Replace text” list:

replace
o’
with
ó

replace
n~
with
ñ

replace
e'
with
é

replace
e”
with
è

etc.

So you could type, for example, e and apostrophe to insert accented e – é.

If your document contains the Spanish text only, you should also specify the Spanish language as the default language of this document. Choose the “Format | Default Language Coding…” menu command, then tell Atlantis to associate any typed text with the Spanish language. In this way Atlantis would use the Spanish AutoCorrect settings and the Spanish spellchecker (if any) for this document.
Note that in this case you should modify the Atlantis AutoCorrect settings for the Spanish language not for the default language of your system (Atlantis uses different AutoCorrect settings and resources for different languages).

Suberb! If Kathleen likes this as much as I think, you have a new customer.

Thanks so much.
Bill
Feature Request Spanish characters TOOL BAR
Feature request: A TOOLBAR with each Spanish character, including upside-down question marks and exclamations.. Just click to insert. No menus, no configuring the "Autocorrect", no taking away the possibility of using "O" with " ' " , such as in "O'Neill", etc. One click = one character.
Sorry, but Atlantis could not have such a toolbar.
You could add the desired characters to the Clip Library of Atlantis.
Please choose the "Insert | Symbol..." menu command of Atlantis, highlight (click) the desired Spanish character, then click the "Add to Clip Library..." button. When the Clip Library of Atlantis is displaying, you could insert your Spanish character by double-clicking the corresponding clip of the Clip Library.
