Spellchecker Selection

Post by JimT. »

I'm using Version 1.6.1.6. How do I switch from one spellchecker (English United States) to another (English United Kingdom)? HELP doesn't tell me how to select. I assumed I would go to Tools/Options/Spellcheck/Spellcheckers and Dictionaries, highlight the one I want, and click Okay. But that doesn't do anything. The United States version remains in effect.

How do I switch from one spellchecker to another

Post by Robert »

Hi,

You do not select the spellchecker yourself. Atlantis does it automatically after you have marked your text with the relevant language format. For this you use the "Format | Language..." or "Format | Default Language..." commands (or corresponding toolbar buttons). Please read "Editing Documents > Spellchecking" in the Atlantis help.

Now if you only type British English texts, and the texts you type are currently being systematically marked as US English by default, this is because the default template Atlantis uses to create new documents is marked with US English as the default language. Here is how to change this, and make British English the default language for all the new documents you create:

1. Select "File | Document Templates..."
2. Double-click "Normal.rtf" in the list to open it in Atlantis.
3. Select "Format | Language..."
4. Choose British English in the drop-down list. OK out of the dialog.
3. Select "Format | Default Language..."
4. Choose British English in the drop-down list. OK out of the dialog.
5. Save your changes and close the "Normal.rtf" template.

From then on, all the documents that you create using "File | New | Document" (Ctrl+N) will automatically have their text marked as British English.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Robert

Hi again!

I forgot to mention a quicker way to make British English the default language for all newly-created documents in Atlantis:

1. Press Ctrl+N to create a new document, or use the current document if you have one open.

2. Select "Format | Default Language..."

3. Select "British English" from the drop-down list in the Default Language dialog.

4. Press the "Default" button in that same dialog. You should get a Confirmation message (see picture below).

5. OK out of all open dialogs.

Cheers,
Robert

Thanks, Robert. I wanted to change the spellings in a novel from US English to UK English. I selected all, changed the language in the format menu as you suggested, and ran the spellchecker. Worked fine.
