How to I go back to a previously typed word and change or delete it, or insert a word. I know this is probably a dumb question, but when I go back and insert a cursor, and try to add in or backspace, it starts tying over the following word.

Hi,
Most likely you are in overtype mode. If you look at your status bar, you should find "Ovr" to the left of it.
Press the "Ins" key on your keyboard.
"Ovr" should have changed to "Ins" on the Atlantis status bar.
You'll be able to insert characters then.
