Having a problem with spellchecker

Post by whimsicaldeb »

I'm having a problem with my spellchecker. It's been going on for awhile now and I've been unable to resolve this problem by myself so I'm asking for help. I've taken screen shots to help in my explanation of the problem.

My Atlantis program shows I'm accessing and using the United States version of the English spellchecker, however when my documents are being checked, it's obvious that my Atlantis is using the British version of spellchecker that is active.

I've continuously accessed the Spellchecker, Options commands to use the United States version to no avail. No matter what I do my Atlantis continues to say that I am using the United States version while accessing the British version instead. I've tried all I know how to do, including re:downloading the complete Atlantis program and nothing has helped so far.

Here are the screen shots showing the problem(s):

Screenshot 1: Atlantis program showing an open document with highlighted misspelled words because the words are spelling in the United States version rather than the British version of English, even as my Atlantis program is saying I am using "English (United States)"

Screen shot no. 2: Accessing Spellchecker options. You'll notice that while I can and do highlight English (American) - nothing shows up as active in the "User dictionaries" and "Main dictionaries" sections.

I do see one interesting thing: this area is the only area that ask/says English "American" everything else says English United States. I don't know if it's this that lack of consistency in the wording that is making the difference (the problem) or not.

Most likely, this is the main area where my problem begins but I don't know how to change/fix this problem.

Screen shot no. 3: Accessing Spellchecker options: Highlighting "English (United Kingdom). You'll note that when I highlight the "United Kingdom" version - the "User" and "Main" dictionary sections in the options activate and it shows the version(s) of British English I can use, or am using... because that's why my spellchecking is doing. Checking my documents using a British English spellchecker as it's main language.

BTW - at this point I always say: "okay" or sometimes "cancel" - I don't change anything because I don't know what to change, nor do I think it would make a difference in this place, but I may be wrong about that.

Screen shots no. 4 & 5 shows what my language and default language are set at under the "Format" section:

So ....everything is saying I'm using the United States English version of spellchecker - and they aren't. The United Kingdom version of the English spellchecker is being used instead.

At this point, I don't what to do ...

Can anyone help me correct this problem?

Thank you.

Thanks for the screenshots. Your Atlantis is using the "English (United Kingdom)" spellchecker because it is the only valid English spellchecker in your Atlantis. There is no "English (American)" spellchecker in Atlantis (at least this dialect title should never be displayed in your Atlantis). The available English spellcheckers are "English (United States)" and "English (United Kingdom)". It seems that you have a correctly working "English (United Kingdom)" spellchecker. But your another (custom-made?) spellchecker – "English (American)" – is not a valid spellchecker. It neither uses a correct language dialect nor includes any lexicons. You should remove it from your Atlantis. For this, highlight the "English (American)" spellchecker in the "Tools | Options… > Spellcheck > Spellcheckers & Dictionaries…" dialog, then click the topmost "Remove" button. Then click the topmost "Add..." button, and choose the "English (American).asc" file. If you still have the "English (American)" spellchecker in the "Tools | Options… > Spellcheck > Spellcheckers & Dictionaries…" dialog, this can only mean that the "C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Spellcheck\English (American).asc" file includes wrong data. To fix this, please leave the "English (American)" spellchecker in Atlantis, then close Atlantis. Then open the "C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Spellcheck\English (American).asc" file in Notepad, and specify the following contents for this file (you can use copy/paste):

[General]
Language=1033

[Fixed Lexicons]
Count=2
Lexicon1=english.zlx
Lexicon2=us.zlx

[Editable Lexicons]
Count=1
Lexicon1=userdicen.tlx

Save changes, then launch Atlantis.

It's working again!

I used the cut & paste into notepad and save to the program files ... and presto! It's working correctly again...

Thank you so much.

I'm glad the screen shots helped. It seemed the best way to explain the problem was to actually show what was going on.

My son (16) had been working with the spellchecks when he added a German dictionary awhile back. It wasn't long after that I noticed the problem. I had put 2 and 2 together back then, but couldn't for the life of me figure out what the heck was wrong. I'm grateful you were able to fix the problem.

Thank you again.

Kind Regards,
Deb
