Access violation

Post by janniklindquist »

Hi,

After experimenting with importing styles into Atlantis, I had Atlantis crash on me and I am now unable to open Atlantis. I get a dialog asking me if I want to restore to documents and no matter what I choose, I get the error-message:

"Exception:
Access violation at 00406CAF in Atlantis.exe."

What to do?

Jannik - using the latest version of Atlantis including the Footnote-fix provided yesterday.

Most probably this has nothing to do with the new footnote-related commands. Please do the following:

1) Launch Windows Explorer, and check (temporarily) the "Show hidden files and folders" option on the View tab of its "Tools | Folder Options..." dialog.

2) Browse for the "C:\Documents and Settings\<your_user_name>\Local Settings\Temp\" folder. It should contain files with .aad extension. Please zip all the .aad files, and send to support@AtlantisWordProcessor.com.

3) Move all the .aad files from the "C:\Documents and Settings\<your_user_name>\Local Settings\Temp\" folder to another folder, and launch Atlantis.

Done - but I have reverted to version 1.6.1.3 and the problem has gone.

I'm sorry to report that I have the same problem again - but now I do not have any .aad-files in my Temp-folder. What then?

If this is systematic with some documents, and if these are not confidential, could you send them to support@AtlantisWordProcessor.com ?
Please include detailed step-by-step information on how to reproduce this problem.
Thanks.

Thank you for answering, Robert. The only pattern I can detect is that I have been converting a lot of files lately from the *.nb-format of the Nota Bene wordprocessor and into *.rtf-files. When Nota Bene has finished converting a file, it asks if the user want to view that file in the default program for opening *.rtf-files. I have answered yes to this fairly often, and the file is then opened in Atlantis. From time to time I am then told that Altantis does not support hyphenation in Danish and when I try to get out of Atlantis after this I get the "access violation"-error.

I have no idea how to solve this, when there's no *.add-files anywhere.

I tried to revert to 1.6.1.3 and Atlantis runs beautifully. Of course, I also tried to add the 1.6.1.4-update again - and again I ran into the access error. So, now I am running version 1.6.1.3 - but I would be extremely happy to find out how to run 1.6.1.4 again!

It would help us fix this problem if you sent one of the documents that cause this problem. It would also help all Atlantis users.

Thanks for your document. It is the cause of this problem. But if you do not experience this problem under 1.6.1.3, it is just a coincidence.

This document includes unorthodox, if not say faulty RTF data. There are serious problems in this document besides plenty of junk data. For instance, paragraph formatting is included in character styles. Also a definition of a style includes tags instructing a word processor to insert a tab character into the current paragraph, which is completely unacceptable within a style definition.

Anyway Atlantis will include a provision for such cases.

Thanks for reporting this.

Hi,

Thank you very much for trying to solve this. However, the problem seems to me more general. Suppose I open a new file and type some text. I then decide to abandon that file and hit Ctrl+F4 to close the document. Atlantis then asks me if I want to save the document. No matter what I answer Atlantis will crash with the following error message:

---------------------------
Error
---------------------------
Exception:
Access violation at 00406CAF in Atlantis.exe.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Furthermore, I am not able to import styles using the import-button at the bottom at the style-tab in the Control Panel. Perhaps thare other anormalitites but these are the ones that I immediately notice.

This behaviour is with Atlantis 1.6.1.4 (also the version you have just posted). When I run my copy of 1.6.1.3, I have no problems.

The last time this happened (the issue that started this thread), I could solve it by removing the *.add-files from the relevant Temp-folder. However, now I can't find a single *.add-file anywhere! What to do?

In this case there were two unrelated problems. One of them (I mean reading Nota Bene RTFs reliably) is solved in the latest build of Atlantis 1.6.1.4 (see a link in my previous post above). It seems that there is another problem specific to your system. As I understand, Atlantis crashes when you click a button (Yes, No, or Cancel) in any of its message dialogs. Is it correct?

Please do the following:

1) Please choose the “Tools | Options…” menu command in your Atlantis, click the “Save to File…” button. Save your current settings to an INI file. Zip it, and send to support@AtlantisWordProcessor.com. Please also send us information about your Windows version (Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, etc).

2) Please launch Atlantis with its default settings. Fo this please choose “Start | Run…” in your Windows, and type the following command line:

"C:\Program Files\Atlantis\Atlantis.exe" -dls -dss

It would launch Atlantis with its default settings. Your current Atlantis settings would be preserved.

Do you experience the same problem under the default settings?

Note that the above command-line would ask for your registration code. Please just specify it.

Hello,

When I try to run Atlantis from the commandline with the command you provided above, I can get as far as the "Thank you for registering dialog" but when I hit "OK" to that dialog (after entering my registration code), I get the access error. Again, this only happens when I try to run 1.6.1.4 - not 1.6.1.3.

Hope this helps,

I might add that the problem is there on both the pcs of the house: neither I nor my wife are able to run Atlantis 1.6.1.4 without getting the access error when a button in a message-dialog is clicked. I am using Windows XP Pro - she is using Windows XP Home. Both Danish versions of Windows and both with all updates (including Service Pack 2). Furthermore, I tried booting into Windows Safe Mode - but still get the access error in Atlantis 1.6.1.4.

Atlantis 1.6.1.3 runs beautifully on both machines.

Thanks for your INI file. We can reproduce these error messages under your settings. The problem is linked to the new customizable status bar of Atlantis. Error messages are displayed when the "View | Status Bar" menu command is unchecked.

You can download a new build with a fix:
http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en ... _1_4a4.zip
Please just unpack Atlantis.exe from this zip file to the home folder of Atlantis (by default, to “C:\Program Files\Atlantis\”).

Thanks for reporting this.
