Envelope printing with Epson 1160

Post by Frank Kolwicz »

v 1..6.1.3: My Epson printer will show envelope printing in the proper orientation in the Preview panel, nor will it print in an orientation that I set in Atlantis and I can't figure out what combination of Atlantis and Epson printer settings will properly correspond.

I can print with proper orientation from Photoshop when I need an envelope, but I'd like to use Atlantis because it's so much easier to setup.

If I setup an envelope in Landscape and upright (normal view) in Atlantis, no matter how I setup the Epson 1160 printer I shows the paper feeding the wrong way and it does not show the paper in the envelope size (#10) as it would from Photoshop.

It is very hard to find out where is a problem. Envelope printing is the most troublesome area in word processing. Many printers behave very differently regarding the same requests made by a word processor. In many cases, the printer's "Properties" might require adjustment. Some printers have hardware switches controlling envelope printing. Etc.

Please choose the "Tools | Envelopes..." menu command in Atlantis, specify the required envelope settings, then click "Print". Click the "Properties..." button in the "Print Envelopes" dialog, specify the desired envelope size and orientation, then try printing.

Why does the "Tools/Envelope/etc.", which prints properly, behave different from:
"File/New/Document/Page Settings/Page Format/Paper Format/#10 Envelope/Landscape/OK"? Which is the way I set up my document when I was having problems with the printer.

The printer settings were set to match the output from Atlantis either way.

Thanks,

Frank

Envelope printing is a very complex question. The problem is that there is no standard behavior regarding envelope printing followed by all the printer models. In many cases, in order to print envelopes correctly, users are supposed to adjust some proprietary settings of their printer drivers. Word processors have no control over such settings. And you could not find a word processor that is able to print envelopes correctly on any printer model in a fully automatic mode.

The "File | Print..." and "Tools | Envelopes... > Print..." features do print slightly differently indeed.
The "File | Print..." always requests paper formats from a printer driver in a fully automatic mode. You can choose a different paper format from the "File | Print... > Properties..." dialog (it is a proprietary dialog of your printer driver), but Atlantis would ignore your selection. Not only the booklet printing, zooming, and other advanced printing features require a complete control over the paper format selection. In multisection documents each section can have its own page settings. So when printing such a document, Atlantis has to switch to different paper formats on fly. Obviously any paper format selection made in the "File | Print... > Properties..." dialog, has to be ignored.
The "Tools | Envelopes… > Print…" feature cannot work in the same way because quite many printer models allow correct envelope printing only when some paper-format-related settings get manually set up in some way in the "Tools | Envelopes... > Print... > Properties…" dialog.

Regrettably there is no universal solution to this problem.
