MSVCR80.dll Error Message?

Post by adamlau »

Launching Atlantis 1.6.1.2 gives an error message box (See http://www.nnotary.com/downloads/error_1.gif) indicating MSVCR80.dll is missing. Add msvcr80.dll (See http://www.nnotary.com/downloads/msvcr80.dll) to system32 and the Atlantis directories. Launching Atlantis 1.6.1.2 gives another error message box (See http://www.nnotary.com/downloads/error_2.gif). How to resolve?

I cannot say why you get these error messages. The msvcr80.dll library is a component of the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 which has nothing to do with Atlantis. Atlantis never tries to connect to this library, and call any function from this library. This problem is somehow connected to your system configuration.

Some Web sites discuss similar error messages (for instance, http://www.allegro.cc/forums/thread/545333, http://www.itwriting.com/blog/?postid=261). But Atlantis is not a Visual C application, and it does not require any files from Microsoft Visual Studio. Atlantis requires only the standard Windows libraries.

Most probably the problem is within one of the standard Windows libraries used by Atlantis. It might call functions from msvcr80.dll. But Atlantis itself never uses this library, or any of its older versions.

Could you recall changes that you recently made to your system configuration?

Problem with msvcr80.dll

Post by Robert »

Greetings--
It seems a number of people have had this kind of trouble after upgrading software like Asp Net or Net Framework 2.
You could havea look at the following pages:

Here is an excerpt from http://www.mcse.ms/archive292-2005-11-1958698.html:

Hello everyone,

My name's Martyn Lovell, and I'm the development lead of the team that produces msvcr80.dll [The Visual C++ Libraries team]. There are a couple of things I'd like to clarify.

First, Norton WinDoctor is wrong. It incorrectly reports that msvcr80 is missing when in fact it is correctly installed in the WinSxS directly in the windows. folder. If you own WinDoctor, you should report this bug to Symantec so that they get it fixed.

Do NOT copy the this file to any of the folders WinDoctor recommends.

Any slowdown you felt on your system after installing the .NET Framework 2.0 was not related to this DLL (since the DLL in question is already present in the correct place).

If you uninstalled the .NET Framework 2.0 because of these warnings, you should feel safe reinstalling it, as these false warnings are not indicative of actual errors.

If you've already attempted to take corrective action for this issue (by copying msvcr80.dll or msvcr80d.dll to ...\system32 or to the .NET Framework directory), please delete them. These files do not need to be copied around, and doing so may cause problems in future.

Similarly, Windows Update will not be providing these files separately. They are already included in the .NET Framework, which installs them to WinSxS. This is their correct location when used with the .NET Framework (though they can correctly be installed in other places). The.NET Framework update currently available through Windows Update already has all the files it needs.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you have more questions, as I don't read this forum regularly.

Hope this helps.
