How To Edit Existing RTF Document With Margins?

Post by adamlau »

RTF document has left margin available for comments. When I attempt to type commentary text in the left margin, the existing text on the right margin is shifts. How to configure Atlantis so I can add commentary in the left margin without affecting the corresponding text on the right? Trialing Atlantis 1.6.1.2. RTF document attached as: document.rtf

You could format your document with “two columns” as shown in the attached document. The first column is meant for comments. The second column includes the document main text.

Note that this scheme is possible only if your document includes a single page, or you are prepared to format each page of your document in two columns with manual column breaks on each page.

Things will be much more convenient with the table support in Atlantis. You could simply create a 2x1-table with invisible borders. The first table cell would be meant for comments, the second table cell for the document main text.

Our RTF documents are automatically generated by our OCR scanning software. Additional formatting must be applied after the document has been generated. How do I create implement a strategy (margined or tabled) to accomodate scan-to-RTF documents? Can you take me step-by-step through the process?

As I said in my previous post, the "margined technique" can be used if your document has a single page. If it is your case, you could achieve the desired formatting in the following way:

1) Open your document in Atlantis.
2) Choose “File | Page Settings…”, and specify a smaller left margin (0.05” or so).
3) Choose “Format | Columns…”, and specify settings as shown on the attached picture.
4) Press Ctrl+Home to make sure that the caret is at the top of the document.
5) Press the Enter key 30-40 times in order to create the corresponding number of new blank paragraphs.
6) Press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to insert a manual column break.

If you follow the above steps, you would have a document similar to the one attached to my previous post.
