Incorrect quotation marks

Post by skootsi »

I am using Atlantis 1.5 (1.6 having had problems with the spellchecker), and lately I've noticed I get closing quotation marks where there should be opening marks. Not all the time, but sometimes. For example, if I type "Remarkable!" the opening quotation marks may be closing marks.

This is never a case of just one or two sets being wrong, but involves a section of the page. This doesn't help my novel, and it's very time-consuming to correct manually by deleting and retyping.

In the past I've had problems with closing quotes coming out as opening quotes, but now that doesn't seem to happen.

If necessary I could unistall and reinstall, but I thought I'd ask about it first.

Could you please be more specific: what problems with the spellchecker did you have in 1.6?

We recommend that you upgrade to the latest version of Atlantis (either the public version 1.6.0 or beta version 1.6.1). Newer versions not only include new features but also bug fixes.

When I create a new blank document, and type your text, I always get this:

In some cases Atlantis might be unable to suggest a proper quote type (Atlantis simply might not know what you are going to type). In such cases, you could type two spaces, place the caret between these two spaces, type two straight quotes (they should be automatically converted to a pair of an opening and closing quote), then remove any extra spaces and quotes, and keep typing your text.
But in a vast majority of cases, Atlantis should automatically make proper quote suggestions.

Atlantis had been working well for a long time, its record blemished only by the problem with the closing quotes, then it developed the opening quote problem. I had no bugs that I can recall, except that the curly quotes never worked. I suspect the same sort of digital rot that infects Windows after a while. I could work with rare, odd situations causing quote problems, but workarounds that involve a bunch of opening quotes on indented lines would take too much time. I will uninstall and reinstall, but I fear the novel file might continue to have the problem.

As for 1.6, upon opening a file I would get a message that the English spellchecker couldn't be opened (didn't save the exact message). That would be followed by the same message but referring to the American English version. Uninstalled, reinstalled, but that didn't fix it.

I can try uninstalling the 1.5 and trying the 1.6 again, so I can give you the exact message.

When reinstalling Atlantis, please make sure that the "English Spellchecker" item is checked on the "Select components" page of the Atlantis Setup:
