More Unicode trouble

Post by luha »

When I want to change the font of a text I can just select it and choose a new font. But the Unicode characters do not change, even if both the fonts support Unicode! When I select a single character, it claims to belong to the new font, but the appeareance does not change! If I try to do this in MS Word, it works the way it is supposed to - and if I try this in Atlantis with a text that it copied from Word, I can change the Unicode characters, too! What is wrong with Unicode characters entered in Atlantis? They seem to be locked to the original font. I want to be able to change them, too!

MS Word also locks the font of inserted symbols. But it does this in a smaller number of cases. Now Atlantis locks only the symbols from the Unicode "Private Area Use" subset (decimal codes 57344 through 63743; hexadecimal codes E000 through F8FF). Normally each font has its own glyphs in this subset, and the original font face of a symbol should be kept in all cases.

OK - it looks like a good idea to lock symbols that occur only in certain fonts. But in the first version, you had even locked my beloved "ſ"! I see that it is fixed now - thank you again!

Now I can define my favourite symbols an insert them with a hot key. Excellent! But when I define a favourite symbol I have to define which font it belongs to. Some of my favourites occur in many fonts. I would like to define font-independent favourites. Then I could insert a character from the font I am using at the moment without having to change from the pre-defined font. Is this something you could make? Would it be possible to have both font-dependent and font-independent favourites?

Greetings--
This is not possible right now.
But there is a workaround.
Save your Favorite Characters as Clip Items.
When you want to insert one of them, type 3 "star" characters to display the current Clip Library subfolder.
Choose the required character and insert it.
It will be inserted as the environment, that is formatted with the font face found at the insertion point.
Cheers

Please the "Inserting Clips As-You-Type" section of the The Clip Library Panel of the Control Board Help topic for more information on inserting clips. More techniques are explained there.

My favourite font family is "Junius". I use the "Standard" version for normal typing, and when I want small caps or old-style figures I switch to other members of the family. This is quite easy: I have shortcuts to the other fonts it the control board, so I can just "paint" the text I want to change.

The makers of these fonts strongly recommend that I use the Unicode-versions of the fonts - "Junicode". It has old-style figures from 63280 to 63290 and small caps from 63329 to 63354. Is there an easy way to change to small caps and old-style figures in Unicode?

The problem is that the "Small Caps" feature applies only to ordinary letters. Characters with codes 63329 to 63354 belong to the so called "Private Use Area" subset of Unicode. This subset normally includes various "undocumented" glyphs. Atlantis cannot know if any of these glyphs in your current font actually represents a proper letter.
