Saved Copy Blues

Post by skootsi »

My computer locked up (so what's new?), and when I rebooted Atlantis (1.5.3.1) it offered to load the (2) saved copies. This always works, so I wasn't bothered. But the moment I clicked on yes, the program loaded one document and froze. It was in the process of accessing C:/Windows/Temp/Atlant1.aad when it froze.

A check of the document showed that the last save was about three hours earlier. The program was set to save automatically every three minutes, and there had been several manual saves during that period. Backups were to be every five minutes, 100 meg limit, but I found the box unchecked and the backups folder empty.

I saved the temp file by burning a CD. The file Atlant1.aad is fairly large, but not quite as big as the document, so I don't know if that helps or not.

After rebooting a couple of times the program functioned again, minus the saved copies. Much of the Atlantis temp folder info is missing, and the Atlant1.aad file is much smaller now.

So how do I get my missing two or three pages back, or can I?

It is hard to say what's the problem without having your document. But if you still have your (big) "Atlant1.aad", you could simply rename it to "Atlant1.rtf", and open in Atlantis as ordinary document (through the "File | Open" dialog). Can you open it in this way?

Are you sure that the “Tools | Options > Load/Save > Safeguard every NN minutes” box is checked in your Atlantis?

If the “Tools | Options > Load/Save > Backup Files > Backup every NN minutes” box is unchecked, Atlantis would not create backups for your documents. Also note that the current public version of Atlantis creates backups files only when you save your document manually or when a safe copy is created for this document. The upcoming version will work differently. You will not need to save your documents manually first any more.

I copied the Atlant1.aad file from the CD-R to a folder on my hard drive, removed the "read only" attribute, and renamed it Atlant1.rtf. This resulted in a file called Atlant1.rtf.aad. Atlantis locked up when I tried to open this file. Obviously has a problem with aad.

I made another copy of the file, named it Atlant1.doc, which gave me Atlant1.doc.aad. Wordpad couldn't see this, but when I selected "any file" it saw it as a doc file and opened it. I got my missing pages back.

I think my Atlantis is a sick puppy, so I will uninstall and reinstall.

Yes, the Load/Save>Safeguard...box was checked. Atlantis should have kept my file current within three minutes, but for some reason it didn't. The backup box was not checked, although it was when the program was set up. I may have upgraded and failed to make sure it was still operational. I don't know.

Thanks for the information. All's well that ends well.

Reinstalling would change nothing. How big is this “aad” file? Can it be sent by email?
