Post by Shanforest »

I'm about to do a reinstall so which files do I need to back up so I don't have to re configure Atlantis how I like it?

1. atlant15om_en.exe to do another install.
2. The key for registration.
3. Atlantis.ini (replace in new install)
4. Anything else?

Re: Reinstall of Atlantis

Hi Shan!

Note that you could use the Atlantis Online Install if you simply want to upgrade your current version.

But if you are doing a complete system reinstall, here are the files you need to backup and restore after running the standard Atlantis Setup ("atlant15om_en.exe") on your new system :

1. Launch Tools | Options..., click on Save Settings to File...
Save the newly-created "Atlantis.ini" with all the other Atlantis-related files to your backup storage.
2. If you have created custom toolbar configurations, save any file with the ".ats" extension found in your current Atlantis home folder.
3. If you have created custom Format Palettes, save any file with the ".fpl" extension found in your current Atlantis home folder.
4. If you have created custom spellchecking dictionaries, save any file with the ".tlx" extension found in the Atlantis "...\Spellcheck\Lex" subfolder.

Of course, you will also need your license key to renew registration after reinstall.

On the File menu (or as an toolbar button) I could save lots of time and, given the fact that writing fiction is 90% re-writing, with changes being made constantly, it would be endlessly handy to have an option for backing up to removable media. The only word processor-- built especially for novelists, story writers, and screenplay writers -- "First Draft" -- has a great little toolbar button in the top right. Click it and it performs a full backup of all that's open, to a floppy disk.

Some files, however, soon outgrow the venerable old flopper, so how about an option to backup or "copy to" anywhere on the system? Say, to a CD/RW, via Roxio's Direct CD, or some other packet-writing program?

Just a thought.

Backing up to floppies

Post by Robert »

Hi, Kojo!

Here is how to save backups to floppies:

1) Place a floppy in your A: drive.
2) Create a folder on the floppy, e.g. "Backups".
3) Leave the floppy in the drive.
4) Open Atlantis.
5) Click the down-arrow button attached to the "Open an existing document" toolbar icon. Click "Backup Options..."
6) In the "Backup Files" dialog, click the "Browse" button. Browse to the "A:\Backups" folder on the floppy. Click "OK".
7) Whenever yo want to save a backup to a floppy, make sure that a floppy is actually inserted in the drive, then launch the "Save To Backups" command from the Atlantis "File | Save Special" menu (note that there is also a handy dedicated toolbar button).

You cannot use any third-party packet-writing program directly from Atlantis. You need to save your backups to your HD first, then use any available utility to copy the desired backups to a CD-R or CD-RW. Note that this can be done under Windows XP by simple drag & drop.

Robert

Please click here to read about the Backup Files function of Atlantis:
http://www.rssol.com/en/html/chronicl/a ... htm#backup

Atlantis can create automatic and regular backups of all open documents. Successive versions of each document are saved to a special folder. In this way, you will always be able to go back to earlier versions of any document.

Hi, Kojo!

About saving backups to CD-R or CD-RW from Atlantis. I just tried this under Windows XP. It worked.

Here is how to save backups to CD-R or CD-RW from Atlantis using the Windows XP built-in automatic CD burning feature:

1) Place a CD-R or CD-RW in your drive.
2) Create a folder on the CD-R or CD-RW, e.g. "Backups".
3) Leave the CD-R or CD-RW in the drive.
4) Open Atlantis.
5) Click the down-arrow button attached to the "Open an existing document" toolbar icon. Click "Backup Options..."
6) In the "Backup Files" dialog, click the "Browse" button. Browse to the "...:\Backups" folder on the CD-R or CD-RW. Click "OK".
7) Whenever yo want to save a backup to a CD-R or CD-RW, make sure that a CD-R or CD-RW is actually inserted in the drive, then launch the "Save To Backups" command from the Atlantis "File | Save Special" menu (note that there is also a handy toolbar button to launch this command).

Robert
