Replacing codes?

Post by Max_Quordlepleen »

Is it possible to do a Find and Replace with format codes, so that I could, for example, replace JOHN with JOHN?

This is impossible with the current version of Atlantis.

Use Find+Replace then click on BOLD, ITALIC, UNDERLINE, etc

If what you really mean is can I change the format for chosen words while using Find and Replace then yes...

You might think that you could highlight a word like JOHN, put it in bold then use Control plus C to copy. Then paste that it the REPLACE box using Control plus V. It only transfers the text not the formatting!

Here is a bold alternative!

I just tested it...

example text:

ADAM HARRY JOHN FRED JOHN HARRY ADAM JOHN FRED john JACK john

Use FIND AND REPLACE: look for john (if it's lowercase or uppercase as per your choice: both cases or match case?)

REPLACE: (ignore if you won't be changing the text itself, just using the icons for B for BOLD, I for italics, U for underline or adjust text size or highlight or other options...)

So FIND NEXT john... it goes to JOHN if you don't choose match case...

It highlights JOHN so now you click on the B for BOLD and only that word changes.

SO FIND NEXT john... It finds the second JOHN.

It highlights it for you... NOW click B for BOLD... and I for italics, too!

So that works for both!

Repeat and this time click the U for Underline as well...

or change colour if that helps to locate them in tests or editing later on!

Keep going through the text and making YOUR exact choice each time...

Be careful and save the text BEFORE YOU START, change the file name and experiment with the test file till you get used to what it does!

YOU must be careful with JOHNNIE, JOHNNY and JOHN'S variations.

Sometimes you could search for WHOLE WORDS eg space JOHN space... or try typing the space then the word then the space, but that won't find them all as you might need to repeat with the word and then the space...

TEST, DOUBLE-CHECK ON UNIMPORTANT FILE INFO!

Only you can test what's right for you...

Long documents are tedious but this should work with care... Otherwise, try to use yahoo email. That has text and graphics as part of the compose message options. You can highlight words manually and use BOLD icons as suggested... You can send an edited version to yourself as a backup:

LOGIN HERE:

Hope these ideas help...

Meanwhile, this forum's compose message also changes the formatting as you go!

Perhaps by adding a Find and Replace feature here, the forum will be improved! Maybe for the Compose and the Preview and Edit Message stages?

Well, actually, the top Internet Explorer Menu has the Find feature! Using Control plus F... This will highlight text even within this compose message box! Now click the B icon above the box and you'll see that the bold forum command text is added before and after, same again with italics and underline!

So, when the PREVIEW is seen with the BOLD, ITALICS AND UNDERLINE... you could simply copy the adjusted text!

Hope this extra info helps! I've used it on forums and yahoo emails before in regard to converting text into website links! View Source is another way to do that!

Sorry if this confuses anybody, but I'm learning as I go, too!

Copy and Paste ALL Formatting!

Post by denis martindale »

Right, got it!

My previous post gave me the information I was trying to find!

The end result is where we must start from!

Type BOLD then highlight it then click on B icon for bold formatting!

Now it's in the exact form you want, click the EDIT MENU, then click COPY ALL FORMATTING! ie like this: BOLD

That's followed by the Find and Replace routine...

Find Next BOLD or bold (nb either could apply eg website html)...

It then highlights it for you!

Now click Edit Menu and then click PASTE ALL FORMATTING! This time it acts as the OVERWRITE action and you continue to the next BOLD and so on!

Loquacious lad, aren't you, Dennis? Posting long-winded, incredibly detailed responses to simple questions that were satisfactorily dealt with weeks or months ago is at least doing your bit to encourage more reading. In the case of this thread, I was already very well aware of ways to workaround my code replacement requirements, and so your answers, verbose and lengthy though they were, were totally irrelevant to the situation that prompted me to post, a situation that had been resolved weeks before you decided to post your novellas. Thanks anyway.

I'm Learning!

Hello to you! Thanks for settling the issue. Of course, I didn't know of your progress so I posted details in good faith. The novella approach is to share various ideas that others don't know. The forum isn't based on telepathy. Detailed replies are sometimes unavoidable. In Microsoft and Windows products there are quite a few ways of doing the same thing. I'm testing the new Atlantis version. It helped me to print some posters today and though it was complicated to set up, the results were impressive.

And sometimes, "less is more", as in the "Atlantis picture" thread. Two posters had supplied simple software solutions to the question, again, a long time before your response. It is quite possible to provide an overload of information., which can have an effect opposite to that intended.

Thank you again

Thank you again for giving an example of previous information which provided concise answers.

When I visit this forum and see this post, I note from the top address bar that it has this info:

http://www.rssol.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=333

So, if it's possible to refer to an exact URL, using highlight copy and paste commands, to locate a previous answer, it follows that the exact URL could be posted by admin or a senior member of the forum, thus helping newcomers to know what has and has not been resolved. Adding the details of who submitted the post and at what time would help, too.
