PDF Issue in Tables

Post by rstroud »

Irrelevant Background Information
(but I wanted to include it).
I made a stageplay template for a screenwriting program that I use (Fade In) with the intention of eventually making it available to others and also including it in a book that I am writing. However, the template needed some pages for introductory material (the "preliminary pages", which include information like Cast, Setting, Time, and any helpful Notes).

Preliminary Pages are best created with a word processor, which typically will allow special page numbering with lower-case Roman numerals in a footer. Preliminary Pages have numbering that is not included in the page numbering of the script itself.

So I used Atlantis. I intended to create a PDF of the Preliminary Pages, and then join that PDF with a PDF page from Fade In that would illustrate the style elements of my template. Now for the relevant part.

Relevant Issue
I discovered that a PDF created with the Atlantis PDF generator trims off a pixel or two from the top of text presented in a table. I have included three graphics. These are:

Atlan.RTF.png > It is the original Atlantis text. The font is Courier Prime.

Atlan.PDF.png > The PDF file that Atlantis creates with its own PDF generator.

Atlan.PDF-XChange.png > The PDF file that the commercial program PDF-XChange produces.

Maybe this is something that can be corrected for a future version of Atlantis, which is a wonderful word processor. :)

NOTE: In my attached graphics in my previous post, I had a table with borders and a table without borders. The trimming occurred in both. I just wanted to clarify this.

Can you also post the corresponding RTF document (an excerpt with the table)?

Thank you for the quick reply. I am sending you four attached files for your consideration. However, I have some important insight into the problem now.

It appears that the font (Courier Prime) is somehow the problem. Acting on my intuition, I decided to try creating a PDF with Atlantis, but with a couple of other Courier fonts. So I tried (1) Bitstream Courier10 BT (an old but well-known font) and (2) Courier Screenplay (available for free on the Fade In website. Both of these Courier fonts worked fine with the Atlantis PDF generator to produce really beautiful PDF files.

The attached files include:
  • PrelimPgs-Atlan-CourPrime.rtf (the "bad" file with the Courier Prime font).
  • PrelimPgs-Atlan-CourPrime.pdf (the PDF of the bad file).
  • PrelimPgs-Atlan-CourScreen.rtf (the good file with the Courier Screenplay font).
  • PrelimPgs-Atlan-CourScreen.pdf (the PDF of the good file).
As an interesting and maybe important side note ... The Courier Prime font is what I have been recommending for script writing (and for any other Courier needs) for several years now. It has many, many more glyphs than the traditional ANSI number of 255. However, besides this problem that Courier Prime has with the Atlantis PDF driver, I have also recently discovered that in LibreOffice Writer, the italic "t" is rendered as an umlaut ä. I have never encountered any kind of problem with the Courier Prime font in Atlantis except for this issue with the PDF creation.

Interestingly, the Courier Screenplay font, which Atlantis handles just fine in every respect, is not rendered properly in LibreOffice Writer. The "Regular" face appears in italics. I discovered this problem years ago, and I have seen a reference to it on the internet, too.

Anyway, the current PDF problem that I have brought to your attention appears to be font-related.

Again, thank you for your quick response and for your work on this really nice word processor.

Thanks for the info and files. This will be addressed in the next build of Atlantis.
