Weird bug with MS Word when I open new file based on template

Post by djsmith911 »

In Atlantis versions 4.4.4.6 - 4.4.4.8 I have noticed an issue when opening a new document based on a template
File | New | Created from template | selection Normal.rtf file and the following Microsoft Word error messages pop up in separate dialogs:

"You cannot close Microsoft Office Word because a dialog box is open. Click OK, switch to Word, and then close the dialog box."

"Word has encountered a problem"

This happens every time I open a new document based on a template (which I do every time).

If you get an error from MS Word when opening/creating a document in Atlantis, this is more than weird. Atlantis neither uses nor needs MS Word. All the document format importers and exporters of Atlantis are contained within the executable file of Atlantis, and they have nothing to do with MS Office.

If you are using the new style Open/Save dialogs of Atlantis (the Classic Open/Save dialogs option is unchecked on the "Load/Save" tab of the "Tools | Options..." dialog), these system dialogs may invoke MS Word to generate document previews. Maybe this Word error is linked to the previews in the Open/Save dialogs.

Yes, I am using the new style Open/Save dialogs of Atlantis and DID have the preview (details) pane selected to view. When I de-selected that pane the problem went away. The first 'problem encountered" dialog was because it couldn't save a file, if that helps in your debugging..
After turning the pane off and turning it back on again, I can't reproduce the error. It still doesn't try to get MS Word to save a file. Even stranger if you ask me.

The MS Word issue came back after a few more tries. So I selected the classic Load/Save dialogs in tools|options and even with preview enabled, I didn't have the MS Word issue. I'm sticking with the classic dialogs for now.

Maybe I was not clear enough. But this issue is not Atlantis-specific. The preview pane in the non-classic dialogs of Atlantis is a 100% Windows feature. MS Word is registered in your system as a provider of previews for MS Word documents. There is probably some issue with your copy of MS Office. You will probably get the same error if you select a MS Word document in the “File | Open” dialog of Notepad or Wordpad.

On the other hand, the preview pane in the classic dialogs of Atlantis is an Atlantis feature. Any preview displayed in the classic dialogs is generated by Atlantis. No Word involved.

Yea, that wasn't clear at all. I did reproduce the error in Noetpad, so I see what you're talking about now. Otherwise I'd want my money back!... (just kidding. Atlantis is still my favorite WP app. :-)).

I might add - given the bugginess of the "system dialogs" - that you make the native Atlantis dialogs the default, and the system dialogs only used when selecting that feature in options.

The new “open/save” dialogs offer a number of features unavailable in the classic dialogs. They are a natural choice for modern versions of Windows. I do not think that there is a bug in any of the system dialogs. You are not supposed to get such errors from MS Office. Maybe there is a problem with one of the components of MS Office. Maybe there is a communication error between the file explorer and MS Word. Maybe some application (an office suite?) has messed up with the MS Office integration with the file explorer. Sorry, but I cannot suggest a remedy.
