How to add date at top

I have just finished and saved a letter, and forgot to put the date at the top. I cannot figure out how to put in the date. I set the curser at the beginning of the document, and hit the backspace button hoping it would go up and allow me to put in the date, but nothing happens.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Try pressing the Enter key.
